Hi my name is Ian. I've never been formally diagnosed with Asperger's but I know I have it as I meet nearly every single one of the diagnostic criteria. I am 34 years old and although I have outgrown many of the classic symptoms of Asperger's, the social difficulties still persist. In fact, I think it's even worse as an adult because I am more aware of it. I will not expose myself to possible ridicule. When I was younger, I loved talking to people but it was very awkward. Now, I generally avoid talking to people unless I have a reason. I just don't want the Asperger's to come out and seem quirky. It's sad because I am throwing away great opportunities for friends which I would love to have but I just can't get out of my comfort zone. I do have a few friends but I even avoid them sometimes because I don't know what to say around them and I don't want to expose personality flaws. Maybe some of you can relate

Welcome Ian :)

You'll definitely find that many of us will relate. I hope that you are able to find some like-minded individuals here, and perhaps, make some new friends. You'll find our members are generally friendly, and supportive, so I hope you're able to feel right at home here. I've recommended a few links below, which may interest you.

Welcome Ian!

I definitely find that many things seem harder the older I get. I have often thought that this is partly because I had a very nurturing and supportive family in my childhood, and now that I am an adult having to function on my own, I don't have others to "fall back on" when I am overwhelmed. Also, people seem more forgiving of kids because they are still learning. I should say, I have been living on my own for 16+ years, and I'm still screwing up adulthood o_O

I have lots of people I suppose I could count as friends, but I don't keep up with them much. Not because I wouldn't like to, just not good at balancing multiple relationships or calling to catch up. Also, I don't like people to have expectations I can't always fulfill. So I think I know how you feel.

I hope you enjoy your time here and find some new friends on AC!
