General tips for surviving tactile nightmares?

Sensory stuff is the number one determinant of how happy I will be in any situation. Crushing headache? Better than wearing annoying socks!


Do you have general tips on surviving tactile sensory issues without feeling like you're having a heart attack/ genuinely dying?
 
If it is general environmental noise, lights, things like that, try lightly tinted sunglasses, and earplugs (the foam ones that come in various strengths).

If the problem is stuff touching your skin (I can't tolerate polyester, for example), all I can suggest is avoidance.

Mostly, my strategy is avoid and protect.

I try not to put myself in situations where I am sure that sensory overload is imminent. We can't avoid everything, though and then I try to protect. I always have hat, headphones, and sunglasses at the ready. I also try to always feel comfortable in my clothing and shoes so that I am not already dealing with sensory issues when encountering other sensory issues (from the environment).

When I can neither avoid nor protect myself, I try to remind myself that whatever I am experiencing is temporary and take deep breaths to get through it. Then, I decidedly take recovery time to reset my equilibrium in a quiet, dark space.
