Forms of Communication

Mattymatt

Imperfectly Perfect
What is your preferred form of communication? I strongly prefer written to verbal communication because it gives me the chance to express myself freely and then go back and edit my writing if it is unclear or I decide that I am not actually communicating what is intended. I find that I am able to express myself much better in terms of writing than I am in terms of speaking. There is sometimes a disconnect between what I say and what my body language reveals. I am not always sure of what feelings I communicate because I am not someone whom smiles so people think I am dour but I am not. I have found that writing allows to express my true feelings, emotions, etc that verbally I am rarely able to. This makes it terribly difficult for me to connect with others in a deep and meaningful way. The wisdom that comes with age, has helped me to overcome some of this difficulty but still my best form of expression is in my writing.

When I was in a relationship, I really did my best expression in writing. I wrote down my feelings of love for my girlfriend at the time and shared them with her via email or text message. Sure I told her that I loved her, but for some reason it came out not sounding quite the same earnest way that it did in writing. It was genuine but sounded somewhat awkward or maybe stilted but I don't know any other way to express the earnesty other than in writing.

I speak verbally, but I still would probably do better writing...

I prefer to write and to text. I can do fine in a structured work situation with face to face communication and have had a lot of training in this area. Try a basic skills introduction to counselling course if you want to get more skills. However yes I do definitely prefer to use the written word.

I just speak my mind, most of the time.
I can talk to people, but awkwardly and not for long..

As is the case for the majority of people on the spectrum, I prefer writing, because I can express myself much more accurately and articulately.

Edit: spelling
