Extreme social anxiety

Recently I've installed an app called "skillsta" that's supposed to help with social skills/confidence and such.
have you tried an app like Onsen? it's an AI personal assistant for supporting mental health. You can just chat away at it like having a free therapist and as its on your phone you can take it anywhere like a little cheerleader. I sound like a commercial. I have no affiliations i just found it helpful during eating disorder recovery.

Although you didn't find people your own age at volunteering did you enjoy it? You haven't told us what the volunteering was. I'd love to hear about it

I volunteered at a charity shop owned by save the children, a charity organisation. I mostly worked at the front part of the store, picking up clothing and hangers off the floor, rearranging the DVDs and books etc. I did not work behind the counter. I only worked at the back a little bit. I wouldn't really say I enjoyed it, it was kind of dull, and on certain days, I didn't really have anything to do. I suppose it is good that I worked there though, considering it is a charity, so I did something good I guess, also it's something to put on my resume.

i've heard of that charity. what a great thing to have done.

It can be frustrating having nothing to do especially when you aren't somewhere you can entertain yourself like you can at home. I'd have been very frustrated thinking about the things I could be doing. At home I have books to read, craft projects to do, video games to play! What do you do if you have time to spare at home?

i've done all sorts of volunteering over the years. From theatres to animal shelters. I found the animal shelters the most interesting because if I did find myself at a loose end I had cats to play with, also there was considerably less small talk to deal with when cleaning out a rabbits hutch 😂

If you were to volunteer again would you choose a different shop, a different role, or a different charity?

sorry for all the questions. I'm just interested.

For what I do in my spare time (which makes up almost all my time) I mostly play video games, watch YouTube and streaming services, browse the internet, I draw a little bit, I occasionally read books. If I volunteered again I'd prefer it to be a place with people around my age, other than that I don't really know.

what would be the ideal age bracket? maybe we could help brainstorm volunteering ideas that better fit? i'm sure there must be other people on here that volunteer too.

I find it easier to "people" through shared interests. When you're gaming do you go online and game with others? With the drawing, I wonder if theres an art class that could get you drawing more. I find that if there's a common purpose to the interaction it takes the pressure off the actual being around people. I joined a yarn bombing group and found a group of people as quirky as me. It was uncomfortable at first because I didnt know they were going to turn out to also be, but turns out their whimsy is on my level and together we've done things like a knitted 5m dragon 😂 there's no way I could have done that size of project on my own!

I'd love to see some of things you've drawn if you feel conformtable sharing with us.

maybe these are things that you have already thought about and ruled out.

@Something05, in your initial post you mentioned “The volunteer job I worked at mostly had people decades older than me”. Why do you think that might be? Perhaps because those people had nobody else to “socialise” with? People who would really, really enjoy somebody who would just come and spend some time with them? If you really want to practise “socialising” with people, how about with people who have nobody else and just want someone who will talk with them and listen to them? Perhaps a good situation to practise and everybody wins?
