Do you guys think, that making a manga about AS would be a good Ideia?

Well what do you guys think ?
I mean the 2 main charecters would have and the main one would have to go troght all this strugling and stuff. But its about relationships too and what they mether and represent...so...what do you guys think?

I'd say it's a brilliant idea, Daniela! It's a broad genre that attracts all sorts of readers. Do you imagine your Aspie character(s) involved in an adventure or external conflict, or would this be a quieter, more intimate story?

Is this something you would illustrate yourself? Where/how would you publish it?

I think it has potential, as adventure, action, drama, and/or comedy. I wouldn't be interested if it was all "gritty" and broody though, but that's just me.

Having been doing making one for five years, I am available for a long-winded webcomic/webmanga/web graphic novel discussion if this thread goes in that direction. :D

That sounds like a really cool idea :D I've read the 'With the Light' series that IContainMultitudes mentioned and I really liked it (it was about a child with "classical" autism rather than someone with AS, but it was still a really interesting read). But that sounds really awesome :D

I wanted to make it more of a intimate story, but I want her (the main main one is going to be a girl) to strugle a litle bit with her familie, friends and expectations of society.
There is going to be a litle action....maybe on the begining.
I want to ilustrate it :P I think I would publish it online, it would be more accessible, i dont know where tough.

Yeah I dont want it to gritty neither XD your manga is about what ?

I haven't read this manga, but you might find it to be of interest (even though it sounds like it's about mother raising a child with "classical" autism rather than AS):

With the Light - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wow...it seems heavy dam,but it seems realy good, did they make an endig after the autor died our i sit ongoing ?

To answer the ending of 'With the Light' - not really. They gave the sketches the author made for the next few chapters in there, but they didn't really get an ending in there. They just did a bit of an optimistic bit at an end of a chapter. It didn't feel finished to me, but that is understandable. It still was a good read (and now I remember about it, a character who I believe has more AS characteristics appears in the last few volumes for a little bit. They aren't a major character, but it was interesting for awareness. Probably the most interesting thing I found about the manga was that it gives you the perspective of how autism is seen in Japan and the cultural difference between there and (for me) England, which was interesting to ponder over).

I can tell you where! You could do it on Comic Dish, Smack Jeeves, Drunk Duck, and Comic Fury (I hate 'em though, they've got a terrible community that likes to pull stunts like "let's all draw Mohammad because the Muslims won't like it!"). There's a few more lesser known hosts like ToonsUP and the nearly forgotten Keenspace now named Comic Genesis. That's just with comic hosts. You can get your own site and host it yourself, but still have yourself listed on a ton of listing sites like Top Web Comics, The Webcomic List, inkOUTBREAK, Comic Rocket, and other places dedicated to sharing links. Some self-hosters code everything themselves, some use WordPress with a ComicPress plugin (I don't recommend it, the code is horribly bloated and slows the site, the layout is often too cluttered, and hacking isn't uncommon because of the security risks of the plugins), or you could find a lesser known one. I'm happy with btPHP, but it's pretty old and most get turned off by the lack of WYSIWYG or rich text editor like what Wordpress has.

I'm one of the official website template makers over at Comic Dish. So if you pick them and want help coding, I can give you a lot of help with their tags and get your design as close to how you want it as possible. I'm not as good with Smack Jeeves or Comic Fury. Drunk Duck is no more customization than a background image and custom nav buttons these days, which sucks because they have the most advertisements on a page.

A kid whose love to explore gets her exiled for ten years from her community that believes wanderlust is a disease. And then we go explore the world! Fantasy/medievalish. Heh, I guess now that I know I'm autistic it ties into my "I'm not disabled or diseased, just different" philosophy even more than it used to. And to think, all those lengths to avoid a Mary Sue main character! :yum:

Sounds intriguing! Good luck with the development of your project.

For hard-copy publishing, I would recommend Lulu. For publishing online, it looks like AsheSkyler has you well covered. I have known a couple of people who've used InkBlazers, Inkblazers.com - Comics to love , but I haven't heard how that went for them. It seems to be a popular option.

Before doing any publishing, you might want to get your characters copyrighted/trademarked. I don't know anything about all of that, outside of my own field (music), but if you're onto something good, it's always best to protect your intellectual and artistic property.

Meep, I forgot the printing half! Ka-Blam.com is also a big favorite among comic artists since they are dedicated to both traditional stapled issues and perfect bound books like manga and graphic novels, and come out cheaper than Lulu on some things. Some people favor Snapfish but that's usually portfolio people. I want to say InkBlazers was recommended to me by the guy over at Exterminatus Now because we had a bit of a mix up through Ka-Blam.

Daniela, I just happened to notice you've changed your avatar. You're a lovely girl! Beautiful smile. :)

Thanks, she did cover up a lot XD Yeah I toght Lulu was a good option too but i toght it was more for books and stuff. And you are right I´ll should problably copyright them :/

Ooooooh perfect, I didnt knoe there where so many publishing stuff wanting to publish manga.,

Aaaaw Thanks XD

Daniela No prob! By this point I daresay webcomics are one of my obsessions.
Aye, mine's online at all those places. Except Comic Fury, I took it down shortly after the Mohammad incident and then some guy started trying to get me involved with some conspiracy with the mods trying to kill him. Strange place. I'm primarily on my self-hosted site.

You should definitely go for it. I Would really recommend Inkblazers.com. They are really good about doing reviews and giving feedback. They have an great promotion system. And a new system that allows all artists to be paid regardless of tier. They also offer print on demand services and other merchandising services. The tier system is actually quite interesting itself it's based on the communities decision as well as those who run the site. The higher up the tier system you go the more is required of you. However, the more you can be paid on the more services that you have access to. It's free for anyone to join and post up your work.

That sounds utterly depressing, I have long refused to watch or read anything with AS characters, media is supposed to whisk me away from my crappy life, not remind me more of it.

Seems to me like the problem is with your perspective. Why does having a character with a yes make everything depressing?

Because if he/she had a happy, normal life then the AS would be moot, imo.

I would do something like, using my own life as an example I wrote what would happen if I won 30 million dollars, it was insanity...
That would make a manga...lol

I think you are assuming that having AS automatically means that the character will have a worse life than any other person. And there in lies the problem. AS is only one component of a persons life. Whether you are AS or NT, everyone must carveout happiness through their own unique circumstances. Every life regardless of whether they have autism or not has their own unique circumstances that must be overcome. And that's what makes slice of life manga great, is watching characters overcome their unique circumstances to find happiness.

In this case autism is just another circumstance. This component makes this particular character's life different from all the other people in the world. I think it's important to be able to have a character like this in media. It gives people with autism a chance to have someone they can relate to in media and it gives people without autism a chance to look past the diagnoses and see that person's life.

Her idea touches on something that's very universal, that is overcoming challenges and finding happiness. It's an important story and one that needs to be told. With the right level of skill and execution this can be something great. Finally, normal and happiness are very subjective. What seems normal or brings happiness to one person can be highly disturbing to another. So I would shy away from making any generalizing state funds that making a comment about autism will only remind people of a crappy life. I think that most people on this forum don't feel that way about their lives.
