After all trips to speech therapists and extra English homework, as autistic it's sense of relief to hear we all in same boat. Not sure if it's asd or ADHD that is reasoning, some blame computer based learning devices in the UK so it's prevalent in number of places.


According to the National Literacy Trust, 1 in 6 people in the UK have poor or no reading skills: “More common is the use of the term 'functionally illiterate'. Around 16 per cent, or 5.2 million adults in England, can be described as functionally illiterate".

It's such a stress in our house, of course homeschooling sends shivers down my spine when I consider I'm worst English teacher who is responsible for an area that already needs extra work. Maths and science are easy but language is required for pass rate.
Years ago a family friend had a son who was maths boffin but couldn't write words and had similar conflict with the school grading system.

There seems to be a correlation between autism and dyslexia.

I don't know if they are causally related, but they do co-occur.

This MAY have something to do with it, if the dyslexia isn't diagnosed.

There are 2.6 million people in the UK with ADHD (708,000 children, 1,9m adults) based on The Lancet and NICE giving a childhood ADHD incidence rate of 5% and an adult ADHD incidence rate of 3-4%.

Dyslexia is one of the most common learning difficulties in the UK. It is estimated that around 10% of the population is affected, with approximately 4% experiencing severe dyslexia.

More than one in 100 people are autistic and there are at least 700,000 autistic adults and children in the UK. These numbers are not the same as the number of people with an autism diagnosis. They are based on research about the true figure, which is likely to be higher. More research is needed to know for sure.
 
Written and verbal communication was also thwarted. Evidence shows us that social interaction is ‘essential for language development,’ particularly amongst younger children who use ‘peer talk’ to learn how to express their views and understand others. Social distancing and the cancellation of in-person classes cut children off from their friends and teachers, preventing them from exercising meaningful conversational skills to the same extent that they would have done under normal circumstances. Months of isolation stunted kids’ development and resulted in 1.5 million children struggling to understand language at an age-appropriate level. As Matt Whittaker, CEO of Pro Bono Economics says, the fact ’that so many children are reaching reception so far behind in basic reading and communication skills should raise alarm bells everywhere.’
