Boxing Day

Boxing Day is a public holiday in Commonwealth countries celebrated on the 26th of December. These days hardly anyone knows it's old English origins, it was a day of rest and gift giving for servants after having to spend Christmas Day serving their lords and guests.

In Australia it's a day to recover from overeating at Christmas Lunch, and to watch sport if you don't feel inclined to get out there and partake. Every Boxing Day is the start of two of Australia's biggest sporting events. Today is the start of a 5 Day Test Match - Cricket - that's played against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground every year. There's a long history of strong rivalry behind this match.

And it's also the start of one of the world's biggest yacht races - The Sydney to Hobart.

Boxing Day is also a huge shopping day with department stores and everyone else selling after the event specials. In Australia this is as big as the Black Friday sales in the US. It's a nightmare day to go shopping for most autistic people.

I only worked in Black Friday sells once during my retail time and stayed out every year afterwards. That year, I literally had some woman clawing at my arm to ask me where something was rather than simply asking me. Like how does acting like a cat sharpening it's claws help you find your product?😳🙄

Here it's also the kid's summer school holidays and many parents will be taking a few weeks off of work too, so everywhere's going to be frightfully busy until the end of January.

Here the kids only get 7 weeks off at summer because they have 3 other breaks of 2 weeks each during the year. Better for the kids and one hell of a lot easier on parents too.
