Contrary to the news presenters it was a controlled maneuver to cross the bar.
the skipper was trained in heavy weather bar crossings.


 
Great thread! I live by a canal, and sometime those boaters speed past me at, oh, at least 5knots!! :D

Impressive....gutsy. Yeah, it was like he took his cat and used it like a surfboard! Very cool. :cool:
 
The moths use a semiautomatic hieght adjustment set up on them. The americas cup boats had to use a manual set up.
There is a lifting foil on the rudder and centerboard.

You were doing better than me, But I thought the footage would be helpful in explaining how they work

At the moment there a a lot of boats coming out with similar systems to the Americas cup boats especially the Team NZ boats set up.

this is a 18 foot boat about to go into production
