AS and bowel problems

Drakanav

Okay, since I was a baby, I had problems with my bowel. I know, it's a disgusting topic. I tried a lot of things to help with my... constipation. Miralax, Exlax, Linzess, drinking 60-80oz a day, fiber, exercising. I do have a bowel movement, but then it goes right back to constipation. It's causing irritability and discomfort, but surprisingly, I have no stomach pain. Usually if I do have a bowel movement, it's very "forceful" and painful.

Advice would be helpful.

Have you been tested for food allergies?
Constipation is a not uncommon allergic reaction
to food.

It may be useful to keep a food diary.
Record what you eat, when you eat/drink it.

I have a notebook that I keep track of what I eat.
That is how I realized some foods had negative effects on me.

I would never have figured out that bananas, for instance,
were the cause of the burning sensation in my mouth otherwise.
Or that eating tomatoes, potatoes, or any type of pepper
was why my joints were hurting so much.

You also might want to look at the recent thread which talks about bowel movements.>
trying to figure a few things out

As for us, we mostly tried miralax on our youngest son as he has constipation issues. Unfortunately, he cannot drink even a small fraction of the ounces you try. He refuses anything more than twelve ounces a day, no matter how often we put the water in front of him. He is a very very picky drinker and eater.

The only other thing we can do now for Dylan is to still not discourage his hyperactivity, as that is needed by him to get that out. He is very overactive, so that helps a little, as he is running and climbing continuously through the day because of his ADHD too, in addition to his need for routines because of his ASD.

And yes, they are painful. He cries hard when such often occurs. We feel bad for him, but am not sure what else to do. As you are an adult, as soon as your body is saying to try a bowel movement, try that. Try to be relaxed as possible, as stress would make it harder. Maybe when sitting try visualizing something calming, and also visualizing in detail it coming out easily. Try not to strain, if possible. That could make things worse. Be patient and focus on a smooth step by step process.

Others may try warm baths, hemorrhoid creams to reduce any swelling, etc, too, if that latter is an issue.

Agree with the suggestion of daily oil, and this might not even matter, but make it cold-pressed flax oil.

Warm bath same time every day is helpful too.

Caraway seeds with your meals not after !!! good for expelling gas ,also menstrual cramps -they are related to Fennel and parsley.

Have oatmeal for breakfast everyday and you are cured.Well, I do it in weekdays only because I get bored of everyday having the same thing, but still works.

I've tried it before, and sadly it did not work. It seems the only thing that does help temporarily is hot tea. My mom and dad say my constipation is caused by autism. I don't know if that's true or not.

Paralysis ,bad diet ,too much fibre, stress ,inherited disorder , Over use of opiates ,nerve damage, Neuro typical suffer from this as well .
If that was true everybody on the autism spectrum will be or was constipated ,I presume not everybody on the autism spectrum is constipated .

Could be IBS. Some people think IBS is only diarrhoea, but this is incorrect as it can be constipation instead, or both.

I’ve had the same problems since birth too! A while ago, I got in the habit of taking magnesium regularly and it helped. But around that same time, I went gluten-free so that also could have been a factor.

I've actually heard this is a pretty common thing with autism/Asperger's...but unfortunately like everything else in the autistic/Asperger's world, it's only children and low functioning adults that get talked about.

I had this problem growing up. My mom gave me miniwheats, that I am still addicted to today.

Olive oil. Salads with Olive Oil based dressing, even better. Fruits and vegetables, beans and lentils. The effects are twofold: One, your bowels will be happy. Two, these happy foods have positive effects on moods, mostly that it helps keep them level. When you're level and calm, so are your bowels, lol! IBS and digestive issues seem to be comorbid with ASD, dunno why.
