When I was a kid my parents always used to tell me “Don’t take everything so literally!” and my siblings would ask me “God, Dylan, why are you so literal!” when I didn’t understand a teasing joke. They didn’t and still don’t know that I am autistic, but it hurt a lot when they said those things to me, especially since at the time I didn’t know why I was like that. It hurts even now that I do know why.
