Apparently learning styles is a myth

This is backed up by some pretty big names including Professor Uta Frith, which is known for her work in the field of autism.

I remember taking a test for this back in college and they either didn't tell me or I didn't remember what the result was but I can't really ever say I know one way I learn better with.

I thought I'd share this since it's Brain Awareness Week. And I'm sure you're all familiar with a large amount of the population which seem to go unaware that they do actually have a brain.

Teachers must ditch 'neuromyth' of learning styles, say scientists

Uta Frith I'm already familiar with, but Steven Pinker is also mentioned. If anyone wants to do a Google search on him, be warned.

Sounds like yet another agenda to push education into the "survival of the fittest" era again, with everyone not making the cut and being force-fed lessons wondering what went wrong.

After the first paragraph or so, I looked to see if this article
was from The Onion. I wasn't aware that there was testing
to determine learning styles or that it was popular in public
schools. That's not the aspect that made me think the
material was satirical.

It was saying that learning styles didn't exist.
I know I understand words better than I do
pictures. Frequently I am lost when an image
is used to illustrate 'what to do.'

Just reading the first paragraph of that article made me cringe! Brought back so many bad memories of school.

This really doesn't surprise me. I studied to be a teacher once, and I can tell you that very little of the education is based on science, or they misunderstand the science. Howard Gardner showed there were many kinds of intelligences, but many teachers who claim to use "M.I." (multiple intelligences) really don't. I wouldn't play ball and teach the way the professor wanted me to, (that is just stand up there and speak Spanish and hope the kids caught on) so the professor dropped me from the program. I like teaching grammar, and for some reason, grammar is a dirty word in second-language teaching.

Hogwash!

To say that there are not various spectrums of learning methods is crazy talk. Some learners learn reading via memorizing the words, some learn reading via phonics, some just do not see a difference in how they learn. Not seeing this in reality is disconcerting. Not knowing that there are different ways to teach and/or learn something . . . now such a person should not write about teaching and/or learning.
