12 moms who did the impossible to save their kids

A mother’s love is like no other. And that’s not just one of those things people say. It’s fact. Need proof? We’ve got it. In honour of a mother’s unshakable love, we’ve rounded up some inspiring tales of just how far moms will go to protect their children.

1. Fire Escape
When an apartment fire put Christina Simoes and her 18-month-old baby in between a rock and a hard place on the third storey, the mother did the only thing she could to do to save her child and wrapped her in her arms and jumped. Simoes severely injured her back—her son Camron had all but a few scratches—and doctors were unsure if she would walk again. She addressed that concern with her first steps a few months later.

2. Emergency Brake
Mom Mindy Tran proved that there is more than one way to stop a car when her vehicle, which she thought to be in park, started rolling toward a busy street with her twin girls in the back seat. She instinctively threw herself beneath the tires , thus slowing the vehicle and giving nearby neighbours enough time to run over and help stop the runaway car.

3. Polar Parenting
You know how they say you should never back a wild animal into a corner? Well, the saying holds true for mothers whose children are threatened. Apparently the threat of one of the deadliest creatures on the planet was not threatening enough for Lydia Angiyou of Northern Quebec, who fought off an adult polar bear that confronted her and her 7-year-old son. The bear attacked Angiyou, but ran off after shots were fired.

4. Duck and Cover
This Kentucky mother showed true heroism when a tornado threatened to batter her children with flying debris. Stephanie Decker used her body as a shield , hovering over her children during the storm. She lost parts of both of her legs in the act, but her children were unscathed.

5. Unshakable Parenting
In a similar situation in China, a mother sheltered her child with her body when their house collapsed around them in an earthquake. The woman’s husband flagged rescuers who were able to free them both from beneath the rubble. Not even a natural disaster can come between mother and child.

6. Bad Kitty!
Maureen Lee was picking berries with her three-year-old daughter in Squamish BC when a cougar attacked, grabbing and rolling the little girl on the ground. Lee immediately wedged herself between the cougar and her girl, stood up with the cat on her back and “threw it off.” No biggie. The little girl later asked, “why didn’t the kitty play nice?”

7. The Mother of All Shark Stories
In a scene eerily reminiscent of Jaws, Florida mother Valeh Levy found herself fighting a shark that had it in for her teenage daughter. Twice she pulled the girl back onto the surface of her surfboard after the shark grabbed her legs and dragged her beneath the surface.

8. Leap of Faith
A family vacation in Spain goes wrong, when the youngest member of the Ramsey family accidentally spills over a cliff. Without hesitating, mom, Kristen Chappell, goes in after son, followed by dad. Remarkably, the boy fell in a pool of water and was ok, but Mom, who was not so lucky, broke several bones and her back. Listen to the entire harrowing tale here.

9. Crocodile Kick
This daughter owes her mom a lifetime of breakfasts in bed after being pulled from the jaws of an attacking crocodile. Rohima, a villager who lives off the coast of Indonesia, went running when she heard her 25-year-old daughter Trisna’s shrieks coming from the river. An 18-foot croc had its jaws clenched around her daughter’s leg, but Rohima kicked and, when that didn’t work, wrenched open the croc’s jaws with her bare hands. Trisna’s leg wiggled free, requiring 50 stitches.

10. Secret Agent Mom
Kalliopi “Kalli” Atteya, a mother from Pennsylvania, travelled half way around the world to rescue her son, Niko, who had been allegedly kidnapped by his estranged father during a 2011 trip to Egypt with his aunt. When he didn’t return, panic set in. Kalli got on a plane, hired a private investigator and donned a hijab and niqab in order to remain anonymous while she ran surveillance. After a couple of months, she swept in, grabbed her son and booked it back to the US.

11. Very Bad Dog
A dog is man’s best friend…until it isn’t. When a normally-friendly pit bull attacked her daughter, Chelsi Camp took a page out of Mike Tyson’s book, punching the dog in the head and biting its ear off. Your real best friend is your mom.

12. Supermom
The superhuman feats moms often demonstrate when their offspring are threatened are apparently not limited by blood ties. When an eight-year-old boy was run over and pinned beneath a 1 ton Renault Clio outside their homes, two nearby mothers, Donna McNamee and Abigail Sicolo, ran to the rescue (along with one other man) and lifted the car to free the boy. He now has a few extra names on his Mother’s Day shopping list.
