    Animals are so very not judgy.

    My dogs and cats are completely unconcerned by even my weirdest stuff. They only care that I'm nice to them, and that I feed them. I find that very refreshing.

    They are gentle but they're also known to have very short tempers. They're rodents so if one bites you it's going to be nasty, but at least we don't have all the nasty diseases here that the rest of the world does.

    Komodo dragons are scary. It's haunting to see them hunt down their prey as it bleeds out.

    We have some big lizards here but nothing the size of those things. Our goannas get to about 2.5 metres long and hunt prey up to the size of a house cat.

    The only known fatality from a cassowary is an idiot in Florida that illegally owned one. He used to go in to it's enclosure with a shield and make it attack him to show off to tourists and he got exactly what he deserved.

    Odd fact, they don't "inject" venom. After they bite something they dribble and that saliva is venomous, in an underwater situation they will have moved away from you before they start drooling and you're quite safe. Pick them up out of the water because they're pretty and hold them in your hand for a nice photo and there's nowhere else for that drool to go but in the bite. Yes, they're deadly.

    Sad story of populist politics really, just after WWI West Australian farmers were having big problems with an emu plague. 3 ex soldiers with more beers than brains said they'd got out and do what the government refused to and started shooting emus. 1000 rounds of ammunition, about a dozen dead birds and several injured birds.

    And the trouble with documentaries about Australia not made by Australians: The video below seems like a serious attempt at a documentary about emus but half the images he shows aren't emus, they're Rheas from South America. As soon as you hear the American accent you may as well stop watching.

    Could be a combination of both population density and rodent population density in which case a higher population of cats could have been an asset since they eat rodents. Either way, a massive fire is a tragedy in it's own right and nothing to be celebrated.

    It can be fun to compact the leaves in a can by climbing in and jumping on them. I used to do that at my grandma's house. I can't do it at home because we can't use a can where we live. We have to pile them by the road.

    Huntsman spiders can bite. It's like a bee sting (they rarely bite, though).

    They are very closely related to the Brown Recluse. Don't get bit by one of them. Their bite causes tissue necrosis, and that's gonna leave a mark.

    Both my sister and I were bitten quite often when we were kids, we used to like playing with Huntsmans we caught in the house. I had no reaction at all to a bite, my sister used to get an itchy rash from a bite. There was no pain.

    The tarantula hawk wasp is very much nightmare fuel (for spiders). They're basically xenomorphs.

    And the Hunstman spider is the bane of all wasps, or anything else it fancies. They're extremely active hunters, I had one run up me one day and launch itself from my shoulder to catch a wasp that was hovering near me.

    We love our Huntsmans here, but even when you've grown up with them one running across your face in the middle of the night isn't pleasant. Our wasps won't attack humans unless you're trying to hurt them, but they do fill up tiny holes with mud. Key holes, power socket holes, etc. They're very inconvenient insects.

    Besides, life on Earth has shown us plenty of examples of animals growing or shrinking into new forms as they adapt over millions of years to a changing world.

    We call squirrels "tree bunnies" at my house because if we say the "s" word out loud, the dogs start body slamming against the windows.

    They haven't caught on to the subterfuge yet.

    Many of Australia's animals are the same, dawn and dusk are the worst times to drive on country roads because that's when all the animals are on the move looking for fresh grazing. But we also have eagles big enough to attack and kill kangaroos.
