  • My hurdy gurdy kit came. It's pretty cool.

The wood parts are laser cut, and the unique bits are 3D printed.

Unfortunately, this will have sit on the shelf until the spring garden rush is over.

    Cool, unique instrument!

Yeah - and expensive. Unfortunately, even those that cost around $1000 are generally junk.

This kit is designed by a fellow named Jaap, in the Netherlands. Gurdy World recommends it as the ONLY inexpensive (about $400, as a kit) gurdy worth buying.

He makes a few kits each week, puts them up for sale on Sunday night, and they sell out by Tuesday.
I'm starting to learn Molly Malone on the harp. I think there's some kind of law or custom that all lever harpers MUST play Molly Malone.

In other news, the hair for my tagelharpa came today. There is something inherently weird about opening a box and finding a literal ponytail inside.

I got the color called "sorrel" because that's what my hair was before it went white.

Is that the one that begins "In Dublin's fair city, where the girls are so pretty"? I think I have a very hazy memory of singing that at school 😸

    Yup! That's the one...

It's actually a very sad song.

Yeah, I was remembering a bit more of it. Not a huge amount more, just "she wheels her wheel barrow, through the streets broad and narrow." Then I remembered the general theme was that she dies and her ghost still roams through the streets if I remember singing "cockles and mussels alive alive-o". It must be 36 years since I last heard it.
Still cool & wet, which is good. We've been bouncing between moderate drought and "abnormally dry" conditions.

I got muddy planting peas. Later on, I'll go back out and plant some spinach.
Cold, wet, dreary, and blah day. Perfect weather for sitting around and getting so bored that one can't wait to do something - anything - tomorrow.
4 paw paw trees in the ground. We are a bit north for them, but I thought I'd try exploiting the warming temperatures kind of as an experiment.

    Also, pickling cucumbers planted.

I'm curious to find out how you go with Pawpaw, they grow like weeds in the tropics but it's usually at least 6 months before they fruit.

Me too. They are the only tropical-like fruit plant that will grow in Michigan - there's actually a city named "Paw Paw."

Here, I think it will take several years before they fruit - assuming any survive the winter.

I saw a lady trying to grow cauliflower in the tropics, they grew really well but never flowered. Just bunches of big green leathery leaves and nothing else.
It's noon and I've planted 3 peach trees and done about 1/2 the chainsaw and clean up work from the last storm. I'm ready for a glass of water and a nap.
Getting ready to make a tagelharpa.

I have two really nice, clear pine planks (making two), and have the other components - bass guitar tuning gears, violin fine tuners, and, of course*, a 1/2 lb bundle of horse hair - on order.

    * "Tagelharpa" translates to "horse hair string instrument." Traditionally, the strings and bow are horse tail hair.
Two new rosebushes , for the ends of the grape vine rows.

"Julie Andrews," pink one, and "Double Delight," red with pale yellow centers.
150 onion bulb are now relaxing in the humus, planning out their short lives.

Nice! What varieties are you planting? I grow garlic, German red hardneck. Right now I have about 40 bulbs growing. Last year all the bulbs were larger than a 1/4 lb. now I am planning what else to plant. Some San Marzano paste tomatoes, Tomatillos for Salsa Verde that I pressure can, and maybe some chilis.
My outdoor stock tanks are leaking. I have line them before I can put my water lilies and rushes out. Dang nabit!
I just got confirmation that my hurdy gurdy kit is on its way!

LOL no, but then I have to put it together...

    It's good.

I'm currently learning to play the harp. By the time I get the kit together and finished (work I really enjoy), I'll be ready to start poking around something different now & then.

However, I'm about to start making a tagelharpa - an easy instrument to make - so the gurdy actually is scheduled for after.
I ended up buying three nice lookin' peach trees.

Hopefully you will get some good fruit off of them.

Are you going to plant them in the country so you can eat a lot of peaches? 🤭🤭🤭

First I'll have to blow up my tv.

I already moved to the country.
Trying to find a local nursery where I can buy a few apple trees. You'd think that in a rural community there'd be options other than Big Store's meager offerings.
After two trips to the bank, I think I've managed the bank transfer to The Netherlands for my hurdy gurdy (which auto correct imagines should be hurry buddy).
Back after big Michigan ice storm.

We lost power (meaning no electric, heat, water) from Saturday until yesterday (Friday) evening.

My refrigerator smells like the parts shelf at a morgue.

But I can flush the toilet now.

And I didn't wake up cold.

Good to know you made it. Hopefully you had no burst pipes to deal with, or trees falling on the house. I was out of power for 4 days and I thought that was plenty. But my dad is still out, along with a few of my coworkers.

I have a whole house generator on propane, but with people saying it could be weeks to get restored, I did what I could to conserve.

    Thanks for the well-wishing.

We came out OK. Just a mess, and some clean up!
The temperatures dropped drastically for a while, and I got caught up on the boiling. Now they're up again, and I'm collecting about 10-15 gallons of tree juice again.

I'm astonished to discover that I should end up with about 3 gallons of grade A pure maple syrup.

I'm considering stashing some away in case that lovely country that loves maple leaves gets angry and stops sending syrup to the country I live in.

We have a lot of sugar shacks operating near me, but the last maple syrup I bought was when COSTCO had some that was aged in Bourbon Barrels. My spouse is thinking of making oatmeal pancakes tomorrow and we will use some of that syrup.

I've ended up with 5 gallons of syrup to give away...
Too cold for two days for the maple juice to run, but it's started again this afternoon. That gave me a chance to catch up on boiling it down - I had three 5 gal buckets to boil down to one bucket.

I had to move the boil down outside into a huge cauldron over a propane burner. I feel like I should dance widdershins or something.

What do enjoy using the syrup with?

Actually, I mostly give it away :) . I enjoy the work more than I want the syrup.
I'm now sitting with three buckets of freshly collected maple juice.

I've had to move the boiling process outside because the house was beginning to fill with mist.

I think I'm going to spend the night watching syrup boil.
Good weather. I'm getting about 5 gallons of maple tree juice per day - it oughta continue like this for the next week. Should end up with lotsa syrup.
5 gallons of maple tree juice today. Looks like the temperature is going to hold in the right range for a while, so tree juice shall flow.
