It's fake and weird. I have coworkers who think like that and it's gross.

It's something I don't get either. It's childish really. "I like you", and then "oh sorry. I found someone else". Honestly, I see it as part of this 'I must have this now' instant gratification bs, that oddly is just a societal norm.
