But, I don't have shingles, apparently. It was just a rash, and possibly from my medication like I said.

I bet you know these things already, but just wanted to encourage you to not feel too badly about this fear. Not to minimize your feelings but it is quite common and totally understandable. Remember that these small things might be able to help….

- Make sure you’ve eaten and stay hydrated before the apt.
- It’s perfectly fine to tell the phlebotomist and perhaps chatting with them can help distract from the anxiety.
- Don’t forget to breath, in through the nose slowly, out like you are extinguishing a candle.
- Remind yourself that logically, you know you are safe.
- Remember that you’ve gotten through this before, even though it was uncomfortable.

Also, distract, distract, distract! Think of walking one of your lovely dogs on the beach and focus on the sound of the waves lapping on the shore. Or something like that. Just some ideas, not trying to tell you what to do!

Thank you. I know that needles and losing blood are relatively common phobias. It's just so overwhelmingly scary for me to have bloodwork done. I think I'm going to have my girlfriend go with me this time so I'm not just being traumatized by myself.

Perfect! I was just reading some resources and one of the number one suggestions is to bring a trusted person! You can do it. It will not be fun, but I know you can do it.

I'm not a fan either. I look away (I don't like seeing the instruments either) and ask them to tell me when it's done and the stuff is put away.

I have to look away, or I actually will pass out. I still have to lie down afterwards. I wish I didn't have to do it.

@Luca same here. Idk if me being super fair skinned/pale has to do with it though. I once got eight vials of blood drawn from me at once and I collapsed halfway through it (I was looking away from the drawing spot and at my parents). My vein collapsed and they had to draw the remaining blood from my hand.

Whenever I get my blood drawn, I ask to lay down but I usually end up staring at the ceiling instead.

Omg, that is so horrible, I'm so sorry that happened! :(

I totally get this. They have to lay me down when I get blood drawn because I fainted once when doing it while sitting up.

I also have a real fear of needles, but since I started regularly donating blood a few years ago, it has really dissipated. I still look away when it's being drawn however. I don't mind blood by itself however, so vaccination is actually more unsettling for me (though I still do it).

Due to my leukemia I've had loads of bloods taken. Initially I was worried about things like the needle missing the vein etc, but I've had all sorts of things happen and none of them turned out to be painful or serious. I thought it might be worth trying to allay any fears you have regarding something going wrong during the procedure - although that doesn't seem to be your main concern.

I’m so sorry to hear you had leukemia :( I hope you’re doing better now. You come across as such a lovely person.
I do worry a bit about the procedure going wrong but my main weakness is the blood, and the fact that I can feel it. The advice is reassuring though, thank you.
