I'm OK when I walk my dog in a local park.

You know, a grown man should really know better than to approach a dog he doesn't know. Add in the fact that it was muddy, he was wearing nice pants, and many dogs like to jump (this is common knowledge, no?). He really should have known better. I think your response was fairly logical! I'm...

    Do your obsessions change?

Thanks for all of your replies. Sounds like serial hobbies/obsessions are pretty common. Spiller- I am sorry to hear about your depression and anxiety. I hope you feel better soon! Judge- I don't know what a beezer is!

    Do your obsessions change?

That is very similar to what I see in myself and what I am starting to see in my son. For my interests I will be totally immersed and invested. As King-Oni mentioned, this can involve buying lots of equipment or supplies, and I have just about as much fun researching the equipment and supplies...

    Do your obsessions change?

my son seems to cycle through new special interests. The time they last is variable. He was on sharks for a while, had a brief sidetrack on raptors, then was back to sharks. Now he's on to minecraft and sharks seems to have been completely abandoned. He's had others in the past that are...

    What's your favorite bird?

I'll answer for my son who is the Aspie. He went through a bird phase not long ago, and in general Raptors where his favorite. In particular the Harpie Eagle was his very favorite. They are spectacular, I have to say. I've always been a fan of the smaller raptors, like kestrels.

Possibly have kid with AS, here to poke around and explore

Yes, I actually have several (online) friends who sought and received diagnoses after their kids were identified. I don't think. I will try to get a diagnosis myself. That does help, thanks. I think I will ask for extra time for his tests. I had told his math teacher that he taught himself...

Possibly have kid with AS, here to poke around and explore

Thanks Karma. Lol, your name confused me at first. I wanted to reply using your screen name and I saw karma, thinking it was the karma points. Threw me off for a minute. Honestly, I think I'm a bit somewhere on the spectrum myself. As my husband was learning about Asperger's/hfa from stuff...

Possibly have kid with AS, here to poke around and explore

Update: my son had his evaluation yesterday and tested as definitely on the spectrum. The psych said that 2 years ago the definition would have been aspergers, but since they don't distiguish anymore it is simply autism. I'm relieved to have a diagnosis so we can figure out what help he needs...

    Please tell me about testing...

I thought id update for anyone who might be interested. My son had his evaluation today and he did indeed come out on the spectrum. This was no surprise at all to me. The doctor said it was pretty clear, not a complicated diagnosis. We discussed over diagnosis and my fears that I was making...

Aspies, at what age did you find your special interest?

My son is 8 now, and has had many special interests so far (he is not diagnosed yet, I should add). In hindsight I can see that he had the beginnings of special interests at a much younger age. I didn't realize it at the time, because his interests were typical of young kids. Looking back, I...

Taking things literally; any funny stories to share

Interesting that you had the same reaction, and that you had never heard he expression before. I'm finding that as my son gets older he sort of has a mental catalog of expressions that he (intellectually) gets, but a new one is always an adventure and I enjoy seeing into his world a bit and...

Taking things literally; any funny stories to share

My 8 year old son, who we suspect of being somewhere on the spectrum (testing next month, hopefully), detests figurative language. He will often berate us for using sarcasm or any type of figurative language. We were eating supper a week or so ago and he had eaten only noodles. I told him to...

    Please tell me about testing...

Rogersmom, academically he does well in school. He tested gifted for math and in his latest common reading assessment he came out as advanced (everything was off the charts, except for the portion that involved interpreting fiction which came back as proficient). He usually gets all As in his...
