Autism And Epilepsy: The Complex Relationship Between Cognition, Behavior And Seizure

had some testing (CAT scan, MRI, SPECT, etc) done to find the focus of my seizures. I recall when a neurologist entered the examining room, smiling. I wanted to punch his smiling face. He beamed that the findings of the tests were all normal. He seemed to think that everything was therefore...

Does anybody else absolutely hate the term "aspie(s)"

I've read a couple of times the word 'aspergian', though it never sounded right to me.

    Getting off medication?

I've been on Lamictal for several years for an almost-controlled seizure disorder. (A couple of brain surgeries did wonders for that control.) This drug has worked wonders for me. Though my neurologist doesn't exactly approve, I've had to 'tweak' (titrate) my dose a bit. I can't wait months...

    Driver license

My Asperger's wasn't diagnosed until I was 50 years old. I couldn't drive because I'd had intractable epilepsy until I had a couple of neurosurgeries. I thought I could learn to drive. However, despite driving lessons and almost 6 months of practice behind the wheel, I decided that I was a...

Does anyone on the spectrum do this too? Or is it just my habit?

I don't do that, but I've had a bad habit of (yuck!) picking at scabs. I try to avoid this. Related, I 'pick' at plants. Specifically, if I see dead or dying leaves or perhaps even branches, I will remove them -- kind of like deadheading the geraniums.

    Timed Tests

I, too, have always struggled with timed assessments. They just don't seem fair to me. Sometimes while I've been outside walking, a passing driver might ask directions. While I know the area quite well, I still must stop and think for a few seconds. Some people interpret that hesitation as...

Increased Pain Tolerance? I hurt SO much.

My experience is that I have an unusually high pain tolerance. However, I've read that aspies can have either an esp. high or esp. low pain tolerance. I'd assume that some aspies have a 'normal' pain tolerance, but I don't know.

    High pain tolerance

I have read that aspies can have either a very high pain threshold or a very low one. I tend to have a high pain threshold. I had this as a child, and I still have it today. I'm a cyclist, and a fellow cyclist once asked me if I ever felt any pain. This pain tolerance generally works, once...

How are Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism Different?

A cycling buddy of mine volunteers in child welfare, and he cared for a 2-and-a-half-year-old boy who had been diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome. I hadn't realized such a doagnosis could be made at such a young age, but I suppose that early intervention is better than late intervention.

    Is Asperger's hereditary?

I know of a child who was diagnosed by age 2-and-a-half. It's good they're being identified early for early intervention. I've read AS is mainly inherited through the paternal line. I haven't confirmed this, but, based on my experience, I'd believe it. I've also read that a high percentage...

Do you like or hate watching sport?

I might watch a sport briefly if someone else has it on TV. Even then, my stint is pretty brief, as I get impatient. There are so many other ways to spend my time. I am a cyclist, so I enjoy (though don't really follow) the Tour de France, but I can enjoy watching it for a while. Otherwise...

    Do you talk to animals?

Sure, I talk to animals. I'm a cyclist, and, when I come upon roadkill, I often tell them that I was sorry that they hadn't been more careful. I also talk to cats. When our cat meows, I meow back. We can have some rather long conversations, though I have never known what we've communicated...

    High pain tolerance

Even when I was a child, I was told that I have a particularly high tolerance for pain. I'm 54 now, and I'm a cyclist -- active in club rides, and I ride a lot solo (approx 150 miles/ week total). A riding partner said something to me to the effect of don't I ever feel pain? I suppose I do...

    "Aspie"

Though I still use the word 'aspie,' I suspect it's no longer accepted since Asperger's syndrome isn't in the newly-released DSM-V. Today, A.S. is one of several autism spectrum disorders instead. The DSM-IV recognized A.S. Is there a newer replacement term? Thanks.
