    Autism and adult women

Thanks, NR. That’s the one I got a 38/50 on today. I believe 33+ is a positive screen. The other test, whose name I forget, that has a lot more questions and gives you that graph at the end said I had both aspie and NT traits. Whenever I have seen people’s results posted from that test, they...

    Autism and adult women

Moomin - My thought is that a diagnosis would help explain why some things are so hard for me and then I wouldnt feel so bad about them. It would probably also make me try to consciously aquire some of those skills, though I could do that either way. I also thought disclosing it as needed...

    Autism and adult women

The short version is that my son is autistic and ever since I heard about Aspergers years ago, I have wondered if I was on the spectrum. I don’t know what to do next. I am seeing a therapist who specializes in CBT and pain. I have pain issues as well as anxiety and depression, though my...

Ah, got it! I’m interested to hear how it works with your beef curry. People who are not me do variations with broth, cumin, garlic, etc. Claudia Roden is good and her recipe is online. She uses white rice which I think is standard. The only big difference with brown vs white is when you...

Red lentils are split lentils - basically lentils split in half and with the skins off. Great for soup, but they would be a weird mush in this dish. Just normal lentils with skins - any kind of whole lentil. Green lentils, brown lentils, French lentils, caviar lentils... or whatever comes in...

Mary Terry - I’m so glad it sounds good to you. To answer your question - chicken stock would work, but I would recommend trying it straight first. Every time I add something to it, like garlic (and I LOVE garlic) it tastes worse to me. The flavor of the caramelized onion is really lovely and...

I don’t really know what to answer about the most common food in my area, but I’ll share a recipe. One of my favorite recipes, which isn’t common in my area but is an old favorite, is Mujadaara/Megadara/Mejadra. This is how I make it. 1-2 onions Olive oil 1 C brown rice 1 C lentils Salt...

do any of you have different ways of remembering things?

I don’t know if this will help, but my daughter is in a public speaking class and the way they were taught to do speeches on a something factual is to have the speech be structured like a 5 paragraph essay. Intro (what I am going to tell you about) Point A point B Point C Conclusion (what I...

    What helped?

Lots of ideas, thank you. We’re doing a lot of those things but some great ideas for things to add, like a sensory space. I’m trying to figure out how to work that, for him... I find it interesting that people are not (yet?) saying ST/OT/ABA/PRT/social skills groups were so helpful and made...

    What helped?

Back and forth is hard for him. He can answer yes/no questions and A or B questions. Open ended questions don’t work. Other back and forth convo is scripted or describing what he is doing. Language needs to be simple and clear so he understands.

    What helped?

His language is a couple years behind but he learned to read on his own, so there’s a lot going on in there. He also has big chunks of the periodic table down so I think his memory is fine. He has trouble with receptive language so kids his age do seem far ahead, but that isn’t necessarily...

    What helped?

We just found out that my almost 6 year old son is autistic and people are pushing lots of interventions. We homeschool and he is very happy around immediate family and with our extended family. He can’t really make friends with peers, but he is a huge sweetheart and gets lots of love and...

    Mom needing help understanding Autism

Update: My kiddo is autistic. As he has acquired more language in the last year, his behaviors and differences have become more pronounced, not less. He is a sweet, happy, loving (and much loved), mellow, little guy and I think the stupid PRT handbook is getting tossed.

Autism traits could be 'edited' out genetic trial suggests

This seems similar to cochlear implants and the reactions from the deaf community. I am not deaf, but I was involved in the deaf community when it was new and the reaction was very similar to the reactions here. The deaf community is rich and vibrant, the language is beautiful and my perception...

    Stimming -- potential brain damage?

Those videos are interesting, thank you for sharing them. I Tried them and liked the way it felt. They reminded me of something my physical therapist told me about shaking. She said that when a wild animal is attacked and survived they go off to the side and shiver and shake for a few minutes...
