What can I use straw for?

Greatshield17

Claritas Prayer Group#9435
Having grown wheat and barley this season, I have a lot of straw now, I plan on using some of it for my hibernating strawberry plants over the winter, (hence why they're called that.) but I'll still have a lot left. What are some things I can use straw for?

archery target backing

herbivore chewing fodder

hallowe'en yard theme base

hay ride requirement

.......all I can think of........

When I read the title, I thought you meant a drinking straw!
Something like the old question "If you had a brick, how many things could it
be used for?"

Seriously. I misunderstand titles or brief excerpts on something all the time.
But when I saw it was straw as in hay, my first thought was fodder for animals.

I like the Halloween motif idea also.
Any type of fall decorations.
It can be scattered around any plant that might need extra protection from the
cold.

Make a Scarecrow? :)

Depending on how much you have, it's usually a saleable product to others who want to mulch their gardens over winter. (here we mulch for summer to prevent too much water loss)

There are straw-bale buildings. Haystacks can help insulate a building for the winter and turn into compost in the spring. You can cook it with its own volatiles to turn the carbon to char, which sequesters it for centuries and improves most soils.

I made a double bed mattress from straw once.

Used four sheets sewn together as the cover.
Two sheets thick.
Stuffed with straw.

It smells good. Good for places that get muddy and you need a barrier from the mud. Maybe call nonprofit animal sanctuary and ask if they need it and can pick it up?

Its used as insulation in self build houses in the uk but i imagine maybe more than you've grown ,people used to make mattresses with it not comfortable, you can also cook with it, one pot slow cooked meals, in a straw box: you fry off suppurating animal flesh, then place in the pot with veg while hot and the straw does the rest in a confined area

We have a neighbor who puts bales of [hay/straw*] up against his house for added insulation during the winter.

*Straw, being hollow, is supposed to be the better insulator of the two.
