Optimizing

Is this a special interest or just systems thinking?
But i'm obsessed with optimizing.
Like when i take medications. I graph the plasma curves. To optimize sleep and then i have two pill organizers each 30 days. To gain some time advantage by batch filling them.
And then i do 90 day supplies to minimize time spend refilling. And then i use coupons so i'll not find the best one but weigh the time it takes to call the pharmacy and use another coupon against the $3 savings.

And like I take joy in having ai do something that would be slower for me to do. Just because I shaved off 5 minutes.
Stuff like that.

I do it professionally too. I love automation. Timing current processes. And then i'll create some new tool that saves 5 minutes a day for a department and do CBA to see if its worht my time.
It's a lot of fun.

I use my SPC individual and moving range charts to try and optimize any thing that I can measure. EIther way I spent my whole career optimizing various processes.

It was a very poplar theme during the industrial revolution - time and motion studies to improve efficiency. It was this type of thinking that led to innovations like Henry Ford's production lines for assembly.

Sounds like a little bit of both.

I see a lot of this sort of first principals, systems thinking in the engineering and manufacturing processes of successful businesses. "The best part is no part." What part of the process is the most time consuming and why? Which is most cost and time efficient... vertical integration or outsourcing?

WIth this as a special interest you would be a natural working in the quality industry, assurance or control,
I usually use tools though.
Humans aren't very efficient and hard to quantify.
So like i make macros or automations.
VBA. Python. Sometimes just excel.
Sounds like a little bit of both.

Always outsource if you can.
There are highly skilled workers in the philippines and india. India is more expensive.
I've worked with really sharp offshore partners and teams.

The catch is language & culture differences, dependability, and adaptability.
The truth is even if you hire someone with a phd in english. They tend to just not quite get it with writing or advertising. It's often just a hair off. Like you look at it and you're like. Hmmmm. We need to change that. But that can be solved with onshore QA and oversight.
It's a lot cheaper if you do non-voice.
OK sorry . . . i could go on and on.

It's kind of an odd passion. I hope I didn't offend anyone. But i just have this way of thinking where it just feels wrong to not optimize labor costs.

Agree, why I made all the ink for my previous employer, Even though I was the lab tech. Having lived on a farm as a teenager did not mind. When they think what your doing is impossible. I only protested when a sister plant asked If I could make ink for them. Fortunately my manager said no.
