Noise problems

Tuffsy

Musician, composer and pensioner from downunder
I just need to rant and clear my thinking.

I was at a members dinner at my local bowling club, around 270 people attended. The noise from talking was quite unbearable, until they started eating! I found it hard to hear people just next to me and when I spoke they did not seem to understand me. I have a problem with the volume of my voice, when I speak loud, people think I am yelling angrily, which makes them react negatively towards me. I ended up leaving early and missing some of the musical entertainment, which was only average anyway.

I usually avoid going to big events but this is once a year and costs only $10 (subsidised by my computer club) for 2 courses and entertainment. But I think it will be my last one.

I'm not a party animal any more, maybe I never was, as I used to mask the experience with alcohol, which I no longer do. Lesson learned.

My condolences

I was a bit of a party animal until I was about 40, more of a beer animal really. I always preferred quieter pubs but it didn't bother me much when things got loud and I always loved live music, but that has changed.

A few months ago I went to a seminar in Brisbane, all expenses paid including meals in the hotel. I tried to be sociable and joined others for meals in the restaurant but I really did not enjoy it. Marble tile floors, marble tile ceiling and huge glass walls meant that even with people just talking over their meals the noise was horrendous.

I'm too old to drink enough alcohol to cope with that.

I'm currently pushing my state government to legislate the compulsory use of sound dampening materials in public spaces. We used to have that decades ago when almost all entertainment was about live music, I want to see it brought back again. Hard shiny surfaces are the current fashion but they are incredibly unfriendly.
