Is there any ways to get less noise sensitive?

I have been very sensitive to continuous noises in places I live.

Think AC or random outside noises.

It drove me almost crazy in 3 different places. Obsessing about it, trying so many ear medications, trying to install these sheets that attenuates sounds, trying blocking sound headphones, ear plugs, saw so many ear doctors that couldn’t find anything physically wrong, trying to force myself to ignore the sounds, trying to force myself to focus on other sounds, trying to change spot inside the same place, broke a lease over it, got into deep depression each time, and considered suicide a few times.

I currently live in a small but quiet apt.

I just got an offer accepted for a house. The house itself is great but it’s not that far from a busy avenue and you can hear distinctly the road noise from just outside of the house. Inside the noise is mostly tempered and it’s not that bad.

Should I try to power through it? Any advices to do that?

My girlfriend and I are so tired of looking for a place - literally several years of looking in this market - and want to move in together. And I will probably lose a bunch of money $30-40k if I back out. So I am seriously thinking of moving forward even if I am like 2/3 certain that this would be an issue that will be again hard to ignore.

Welcome any thoughts or feedbacks. Thank you.

Get a small yelping dog, then the traffic noise won't be so bad. All joking aside, trying calking around the windows to help. Maybe pick the room farthest away from the street for your bedroom? A more expensive option- sound proof one room? If you own the place, you can replace the windows on the noisest side? You also can run rubber insulation around your door jam that will cut down on noise too.
Good luck with your new place and girlfriend.

Music(you can replace this with whatever causes a phobia\sensitivity) and gradual desensitisation ,what autism does is called flooding in human psychology terms ,listen to a recording !gradually increasing it ,then when youre at the loudest ,you can bare, go to the area of trauma! with someone calm\trustworthy, preferably a therapist specialising in neurology asd

When I am in pain I get the best relief by going into the pain. It is a meditation technique where, instead of trying to stop the pain in some way, you focus on the pain in order to notice that the pain is just a sensation and is not actually harming you on its own.

I suggest you try something like that for noise. To do it, being by being still. Now, notice the noise. Don't judge it. Try not to think "too loud", "too sharp" or whatever you find disagreeable. Just feel the noise. Don't label it or identify it. Just feel it. Every time you try to judge the noise just push the thought away and go back to just feeling the noise. Then begin to notice that the noise is not harming you. Accept the noise.

Often it is our resistence that makes a thing disagreeable. The thing it's self is actually neutral.
If you meditate with the noise as I suggested you should be ab e to get to the point where the presence of the noise is not relavent.

@Suzette has some good "biofeedback" advice. I know that when my brain is overworked, mentally exhausted, and I get that "swollen and hot" sensation inside my skull,...my sensory issues are significantly amplified. However, even after sleep, NSAIDs, anti-oxidants, L-theanine, etc....and I am back to my baseline,...the sensory issues are still there, but lessened.

There are some things you do have some control over to lessen the effect, but I can't say I've read of anyone having their sensory issues go away.

Or two. Or three. Or five.

RIP, little precious friends. A lot of noises I find distressing, but not their barking.

For me it helps when I sleep and eat enough and healthy. When I am healthy overall. When I do not stress myself out. Means, when I am in a rather good place lifewise. If I am not I will even be kept awake by the sound of the blood rushing through my ears. I seriously had that. It was horrible. I wish you good luck with the house!
