Get your kid tested for Autism

My friend insisted that her kid doesn't have autism...
I told her that I'm not an expert... but there are some things that I can do to suggest that your kid might need to be examined.

Your kid doesn't have autism huh ?
Ok... watch this.

I gave my friend's 4 year old child, a children's book, a power wheels jeep and a 30 pound dumbbell.

He read the childrens book out loud to the both of us, right in front of us.
And then I read the children's book, to confirm that he's correct.

I gave the kid a 30 pound dumbbell...
I told the kid.... I don't expect you to be Arnold Schwarzenegger... just lift it...
Both hands I don't care.. its 30 pounds and you're 4 years old.

He lifted it, quite a bit more easily than even I expected him to...

Then I said... so your kid doesn't have autism huh ?
he's just a big strong genius huh ??
lol

Watch this.

Then I gave the kid a power wheels jeep,
And told him to drive it...
You see how straight adults drive their cars ?
Drive it just like that... keep your eyes on the road and pay attention to signs, and go around things when they're in front of you.

He did exactly that... very well.

Then I said to his mom...

I know he seems gifted.

If he were gifted, he would be an absolutely helpless, blind, deaf baby that NEVER would have done anything he just did.

He's not gifted.... in fact he's very badly disabled.
Mark my words.

Trust me on this... get him tested.

She asked me how I know...
And so I said... I did the exact same thing.... and now I'm not a zoologist, but a self employed truck driver.
And I'm goddamn lucky to be that much.

how does that make the child autistic? you havent said anything that makes the condition stand out, even though you say you experienced life like that,it doesnt mean the child doing the same thing is definitely autistic.
and did you actually tell her,her son is very badly disabled? id lay off telling your mate their child is either very badly disabled or autistic, and best off just offering advice if she asks, mothers are very protective of their children and often will take it as an insult if you tell them their child is autistic.
being autistic doesnt equate to being 'very badly disabled' either, the challenges of autism come from society and the environment clashing with us and not understanding or accomodating our needs.

ok thanks

the test that I gave the kid, is about showing that the kid has some Atypical attributes that the kid should not have until a lot later, suggesting a developmental problem may possibly exist.

ok thanks
no problem mike! i just think itll go badly for you as i have said to my sister before,i think my niece/her older daughter is autistic, and wow that argument went on for months,i was abused and in the end she said she wouldnt want her daughter to have the troubles i have.
mothers are very fierce protectors of their children.

i think if she asks again about autism, give her the link to this test:
http://www.childbrain.com/pddassess.html
its a good autism test.

ah ok i understand you now.
could it not suggest giftedness as well? i definitely recommend giving her the link ive just posted if she asks again! that will help.

The kid being strong does not prove or suggest anything. This sounds like a bright, strong kid, able to follow directions. That does not make the child autistic in any way.

typically most geniuses develop normally.
their brilliance begins after they spent some time in school.

Welcome to Aspies Central.
I'm not convinced the child in question is on the spectrum. I do agree with you, though, that early intervention is important.

By this thinking, my niece would be seriously autistic. She's now nearly 8, and in no way anywhere near the spectrum. Some kids are just more advanced than others, doesn't mean they should see a specialist immediately.
