The legacy automakers are trying to sort out similar issues. If you get too big and slow, and you've invested heavily in old technologies, you aren't agile enough to quickly pivot and transition into something new. You lose market share quickly.
Seeing what is going on south of us, though this may be of interest for those seeing employment. Saw first hand how important steel is to economy and in turn how important coil lines are. Actually Nucor built coil line for garage doors .could not print so sub contracted to my plant for wood grain prints. If automotive goes prepaint look out. This what killed my appliance plant, I was on negotiating committee my previous position was on aluminum coil line. So saw that coming. weird kept my mouth shut. Next negotiation shut plant down. The real issue is spot welding and fasteners or redesigning.

I can see so much so obvious. Stamping and roll forming continuously is cheaper than molding game changer saw this first hand. paint first not paint later. Imagine if Elon sees this. What an idiot. I hope I'm giving some of my fellow AspIe's ideas do some research opportunities available, choke points are when you can change things. With my current knowledge base, could easily make a ton of money consulting not interested. Willing to assist my fellow Aspies I Saw first hand our customers saving millions of dollars, just because they did not know about coil coating and it's limits or perceived limits.

Tesla's new Robotaxi is made of a composite material (unclear what that is at this time) molded with the color. We will see how all this holds up over time, but perhaps it may be a good idea for its specific application. No paint shop. No corrosion issues. Dent and scratch resistant.
Stamping and roll forming steel and aluminum may be less costly in specific applications, no doubt, but Tesla has proven using "gigapresses" less costly, overall, than the legacy automakers when it comes to automobile production. Other than the investment in the presses, Tesla has demonstrated significant cost savings with their processes and a more consistent and structurally sound end product. They were able to save significant money in terms of reducing factory floor space and fewer welding robots. The costs associated with producing their vehicles have and continue to decrease. The plan is this vision of "the machine that makes the machine" and they are quickly moving in that direction. Do not want to make this about Tesla, rather about how the steel manufacturing industry is changing Primary steel manufacturing vs scrap steel. Nucor found a way to turn scrap steel into high quality coil. Now just waiting for casting steel. Either way the last big break through was bending pipe with water, hydro forming. Most auto assembly plants are one third paint line, imagine replacing this with coil for all the sheet metal prepainted attach to vehicle frame much like the Saturn car. Paint line replaced by a small crew running coil line, watched this first hand with appliances. Yes I like the giga press uses Aluminum lots of room for innovation. When I retired just saw automotive experimenting with under hood parts. Plastic in not the future innovation with steel is. I am an expert with plastic after all paint is plastic.
Just looked up difference between hot rolled steel vs cold rolled steel which I am familiar with. hot rolled can use electric ovens scrap steel. however need lots of electricity. Wife just informed me Nutech was on my brothers buy list years ago. We do not purchase American stock, he does not us. Just looking to be comfortable not rich. Waiting for Nutech to open some plants up here they are the leaders in turning hot roll into cold rolled This is key, called green steel. Orange is not my colour. Nutech just built new coil line just before I retired took over all garage door business.

I'm seeing stuff Follow the steel follow the Future. Electricity is key to make the steel or special steel to make electric motors. I like connecting dots doing it my whole life.

Going to see my Buddy on Wednesday he used to work at Our most significant steel manufacturer, Being a fellow Aspie, curious what insights he has.
More going on here then meets the eye.
Now realizing choke point is bigger than steel, aluminum is equally important. Have lots of experience with this metal, sheet and extrusions. Planes, trains and automobiles, plus trucks with trailers and other forms of transportation.

Very interesting https Ineresting back story on Nucor They built coil line picked one product to concentrate on garage door, could only do solid colours, so approached us for prints. unfortunately only one person knows how to control colour on print inks to a degree no variation is visible, I'm that guy. Would love to train an understudy.
