Anyone with ADD/ADHD as a co-morbid?

I am diagnosed with adult ADHD and Asperger's syndrome, and after seeing my psychiatrist today whom is a specialist in adult ASD/ADHD, I've been prescribed 'Ritalin' to help me concentrate which in turn can also reduce my anxiety levels, but I just read up about 'Ritalin' also called 'Methylphenidate' on wikipedia and it says the effects of taking it are similar to cocaine or amphetimine and that its a controlled 'class B' substance in the UK, its illegal to possess it without a prescription. Reading all this has made me very nervous about taking it as I'm due to start taking it tomorrow. Has anyone else been prescribed this and should I really be worried?
 
Unfortunatly no, but you cant believe everything you read on wiki. If your psychiatrist perscribed it, it should be for the best
 
I have adhd and tourettes and few other things and was also on ritalin. It made me tired and doc stopped it. Im now on risperdal consta depo injection after being on tabs for few years and not taking them properly. I bet you been tried on quite few diff 1s like me. I am now on the right medication that works for me and have settled down. I have 10 month old boy which surprises some people when i tell them my diagnosis. It proves that nothing can hold you back in life. I thought i must add that ritalin is not addictive if you stick to docs advice. You got nothing to worry about mate. I'm just going to take them as my psychiatrist told me, I am seeing her again in 2 weeks to check how I'm getting on. Dom, I too have children, my son Caleb is nearly 6 and has a dx of moderate to severe autism and epilepsy, and my daughter Natalie is 2 and a half and has been referred for ASD assessment. My wife is NT however she suffers with PTSD due to an abusive parent. Its taking alot of help and outside support but we are holding together as a family, anything is possible :)
 
Hi Andrew, do please let us know how you got on and whether the ritalin was helpful.

I have symptoms of ADD as well, which is much worse when I am run down or depressed. But that is interspersed with spurts of hyperfocus. I'm not on any meds but I am considering taking ADD meds in future when I get my next job.
 
Just to update, the ritalin is helping alot with concentration and although its a 'stimulant' I do feel calmer through taking it. I dont think it has helped much with being autistic, if anything my asperger traits are a little more pronounced but its nice to be able to concentrate on my photography obsession :). If you are thinking of taking ritalin remember its a controlled class B substance, its illegal to possess without a prescription.
 
Andrew, how are things going for you now? I see you haven't been around in quite some time. Hopefully ritalin did the trick for you. I actually had a friend who was prescribed it, it really did help her. Remember, you can't always believe everything that you read online...especially Wiki!
