Hi,

My son has Sensory Processing Dissorder and we and his school OT thought he might also have aspergers/HFA because of some of the behaviours he shows at home.

My son had his ADOS assessment last year and we were told that he did not meet the criteria for ASD, BUT if he didn't grow out of some of his behaviours by the end of Primary school (he is 8 at the moment), we might want to be re-assessed before he goes upto secondary school.

Just wondering whether this is common? We were expecting to get told a definate yes or no, not a not at the moment:|

We are considering asking for a 2nd opinion as he is certainly not growing out of his behaviours, if anything he is growing into them - he just adds new stuff all the time. We are also struggling with his anger and temper tantrums.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Claire :)

You know my thoughts on that get a second opinion my only concern would be the stress on you son during the evaluation. But it might be worth it to have a definiate yes or no. You could always try regualr child therapy and see if some of hte behaviors improve that way too. Just a few thoughts. Good luck!

The one thing I'd like to add is that your son is probably having difficulty expressing himself, which in turn makes a diagnosis more difficult. It's very possible that "not at the moment" is the best that can be done right now. And Arashi222 makes a good point about the stress; it's, what, another 3-4 years before secondary school? Maybe it's time to wait. Then again, I had trouble expressing myself until my late thirties. :|

Another thing to consider would be you're own stress level too. Flinty said it too that maybe right now there isn't a yes or no but there maybe some therapies that would work to help him with his behaviors even if he isn't yet on the spectrum enough for them to say yes or no. As a social worker my suggestion is take a look at the stress on you and you're son and determine if it is worth a second opinion. Is it worth the stress on all of you to keep waiting or keep trying. There is no right or wrong here. its entirely up to you as to what you think is the right option. I wish you a lot of luck though. I hope this helps and just know that we are all here for you to chat with if you need support.
