Why, "defeated"?

An imaginary competition between you and a stranger.......

This sounds like borrowing sadness from where ever you can.

I see it all the time at the park. I saw a fat guy uglier than me with an attractive woman holding hands. Yes it annoyed me. But I don't feel defeated.

Life is not a zero sum game and somebody in a relationship is not preventing your success. You seem to want some personal achievement that is only causing you grief when there is no shame in settling if that would bring you contentment. Remember:
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometime you'll find
You get what you need
