I wonder if this is one way people tend to lose weight on this medication. Does the Rx information or your doctor say that the side effects should go away?

medication can't change your thoughts. You are the

It's called Topiramate and I am only taking 50 mg twice a day.

It definitely looks like one of those medications that takes a long time to level out and start working properly (2 to 4 weeks). It makes sense that the adjustment period could be frustrating.
