She told me that when I have an anxious or emotional reaction to something, I should identify that it’s an intrusive thought, and that it doesn’t have to affect my reality. And that I can ignore things that are upsetting, I don’t always have to speak my mind.

Mindfulness exercices are useful for that. Become aware of the intrusive thougth, acknoledge it, and keep focusing on what you have decided to focus.
