I hate this too. In my experience, it's not maintaining eye contact. It's deeply frustrating.

As I said whenever I try to get into any type of conversation I am always inturruped.

When I talk to my Yoga teachers after class I am the last to leave especially on Monday and Wednesday nights when they lockup I can talk to them. But in the mornings when there are the same annoying students I get inturruped.

Sorry, I thought you meant the person you were talking to was interrupting you.

Last Friday I suggested introducing finger rules in a meeting (showing fingers when you need to talk to indicate the urgency of your comment) to prevent interruptions, as in my experience conversations flow much smoother when using them. I was interrupted as I was starting the explanation to be told the rules would probably be too complex, and anyways, in their experience interruptions don't tend to be a problem.

@Tony Ramirez

It is possible for me to have extended conversations with another person without getting
interrupted because I am rarely in 'large group' situations. It would be unusual for me to
be around more than one person at a time.

The whole thing bordered on parody. I mean, I was interrupted when starting to explain my suggestion for preventing interruptions because "interruptions haven't really been a problem". It was a mental health related volunteer organization to boot. I like the people there and they don't know about the autism, but I was pretty miffed. It was our second meeting and being talked over like that isn't the best start.
