@Forest Cat - I had a couple of the model Volvo you posted, although, I don't think the model-name was 'amazon', interestingly. @maycontainthunder - I hope all goes well with your project!

A friend of mine had a Volvo 740, he put a 450 horsepower engine into it. :) And juiced it up in every possible way. Who does that to a station wagon. So people would see an old big heavy Volvo station wagon, nothing impressive about it. Then he stepped on the gas and made the earth spin faster. That was a fun car.

Good luck with the project and keep us posted! :)

The battery is proving to be very dead. Most of yesterday on charge barely got any power into it. We'll try again this evening.

Battery seems to have started to wake up. Now reading 12.8V We'll see if it will start at tea time.

Your Volvo probably wants a brand new fancy battery. :) Volvos like to be spoiled.

Don't worry, it will get spoilt alright! I'm curious if it will start on two year old fuel though. I've had things refuse on month old fuel in the past!

It's a Volvo, it will start. :) My dad used to say that the only way to stop an old Volvo was to shoot it. They are well built.

By the way, did you know that Volvo means "I roll" in latin, conjugated from "volvere"? It was originally registered as a trademark for ball bearings. We should thank Sweden for making those cars. Especially the Amazons.

Knew about the 'I roll'. A common failure in 740's was oil in the distributer. Many went for scrap because of this fault.
Here's a funny fact for you; for many years Rolls Royce didn't use the term 'break down' instead they called it 'a failure to proceed'.

Fitted new battery and, after some spluttering, it started and ran fine. Not sure if the thermostat is opening, something else to check before Friday.

Congratulations! It started! Good luck with the rest of it. I'm not a motorhead but I've really enjoyed reading everyone's exchanges about this. Because it's a Volvo and because it's you people. If it was a Ford or Holden or Toyota I would care far less.

I want to tell you a car-related joke. A Japanese approached a Bavarian in the Hofbraeuhaus (sorry no Umlauts) in Munich, bowed and asked if he might sit at his table. The Bavarian assented.

They drank their beers quietly, then the Japanese got up and bowed again, and asked the Bavarian, "Can I show you something from my Japanese homeland?"

The Bavarian was surprised but said, "Sure."

When he regained consciousness, the Japanese bowed and said, "That was jiu jitsu from my Japanese homeland!"

They got back to drinking their beers. After a while, the Japanese got up again and bowed at the Bavarian.

The Japanese said to him, "Can I show you something else from my Japanese homeland?"

The Bavarian was a bit nervous, but said, "OK."

When he regained consciousness, the Japanese bowed and said, "That was judo from my Japanese homeland!"

They got back to drinking their beers. After a while, the Bavarian got up and bowed at the Japanese.

The Bavarian said, "Do you mind if I show you something from your Japanese homeland?"

The Japanese was surprised, but bowed back at the Bavarian and assented.

The Bavarian left the Hofbraeuhaus for ten minutes. Then he came back.

Thanks Callistemon! Volvo also moved so the brakes and clutch aren't stuck. The brake fluid is a horrible brown colour so it will have to be changed. When it cools down outside I'll blow up the tyres.

I have zero motor aptitude and admire skills in others that I don't have.

What are you blowing the tyres up with? Dynamite? ;)
