Awareness of your mannerisms in social interactions

I can even see these in the mirror. I often hold my head at a weird angle. My facial movements are abnormal. One of my stims is rhythmic motion of the lower jaw and at times it shows up as a strange oscillation of the muscles around my mouth and jaw.

Spectrum adults coping with childhood trauma caused by others

Ah, the wonders of the internet. When I was 11 years old a small group of kids led by one especially prominent thug attacked me and another kid. It was especially bad - they knocked us off our bicycles in mid motion. Talk about road rash. In any case, after elementary both me and the thug moved...

I'm Autistic like my brother, but treated very differently by my parents

Although it was my mother who first labelled me a "Little Professor," I was always deemed to "easy" and "successful" child. The reason is obvious. My brother is much lower functioning than me. Against that yardstick I reckon my parents figured I was NT. Now to cut them some slack, both me and...

What do you think causes ASD?

One reason we get mis characterized as lacking empathy is, even though we may be able to put ourselves in others' shoes, when it comes to verbalizing such (I'm being generous here ... sometimes certain NTs are more properly, bloviating ... er ... over communicating this), we are not always doing...

What do you think causes ASD?

From my own experience and witnessing the experiences of others with ASD, I believe that our perception is tuned differently than NTs. We have gifts they lack and have deficits in areas they take for granted. Now, let's look at science. Science has identified a super set of genes which appear...

    Newbie: Yet Another Little Prof(essor)

Hi all, I'll be going by "Yet_Another_Little_Prof" here. Retrospectively, my own Autism journey began when I was of single digit age. It still rings in my head, my Mom commenting that I was "a Little Professor." Back in those days, one had to be quite low functioning to be labeled "Autistic."...

For Those of You That Are Married...

Empathy, schmempathy! FWIW, I am innately a bit of an empath. Others' challenges and sadness can make be break out in tears. Honestly, I'm probably a bit too much of an empath. The issues in my marriage have nothing to do with empathy. What causes conflict are things like, my brain farts, my...
