Do we have way more computer power than we need?

Two of my Macs are still using "spinning rust" :-) For most stuff there isn't a huge amount of difference in terms of speed, usually if you open something you don't use often it gets a bit laggy compared to MacOS on an SSD. Windows is another story though. It starts ok but after a few weeks...

Do we have way more computer power than we need?

I think that might explain a few things for me. I can hear the slightest anomaly with our cars and that helps keep them ticking over as I spot problems before they become big problems. In my previous job I could hear the telltale signs of a failing server hard disk about 3 months before anyone...

Do we have way more computer power than we need?

I've done essentially the same thing and switched the PCB from a dead drive that had been pinging a lot until one day it just didn't spin up anymore. It was still pinging away but held out long enough to transfer my documents. Then I put the PCB back on it's drive and copied everything back to...

Do we have way more computer power than we need?

SSDs are quite wonderful :-) I have one installed in my MacBook and it became chock full of stuff that I got a bit behind with organising and moving for longer term storage. The fact that it was almost full and my MacBook was still very responsive shows how much of a good upgrade they are :-) I...

Do we have way more computer power than we need?

MacOS had that covered more than 20 years ago :-) I like the cute flourishes in OS X/MacOS :-) To be fair Apple managed to do this all without sapping the CPU of all its life. It didn't use much in the way of GPU until Leopard (10.5.x) at which point they made a big song and dance about the dock...

Do we have way more computer power than we need?

I had no idea about this! To be fair the late 90s was a time when just about everyone seemed to be suing Microsoft :-) If I remember correctly, they had stolen code from Apple too and I seem to remember Adobe. I think in the end Microsoft agreed to buy shares in Apple and that helped prop them...

Do we have way more computer power than we need?

That makes sense. I do remember reading about some of the points you made and the big buzz about Windows XP being a consumer orientated version of Windows 2000/NT and how it would be a huge leap forward. Until then everyone used to say to stick with Windows 98SE. To be fair it was fairly stable...

Do we have way more computer power than we need?

This one kinda reminds me of the OG Xbox Flubber in the boot sequence, but waaaay more complex and also made by the Borg from Star Trek! Those clock cycles are going to great use they look amazing! :-)

Do we have way more computer power than we need?

Sounds like my Core2Quad or possibly Xeon CPU running Call of Duty, it was the 80s themed one, can't remember what it's called now Cold War? I only played it past the first mission. I couldn't deal with the violence, something that I seem to have become a lot more sensitive to the last few...

Do we have way more computer power than we need?

Yeah :) It was deliberate to hopefully encourage people to think about what they prioritise on their computers and consider if they are a bit overspecced while still being "old-fashioned" perhaps. I've been wondering about this subject for around a decade. There's a video about basically this...

Do we have way more computer power than we need?

Some of those Photoshop effects can use a lot of CPU power, well, at least if you prefer not to wait around all day for a CPU like the ones I have in my machines. Having said that, it's one thing to be good with Photoshop and really make use of it and entirely another for some other people who...

Do we have way more computer power than we need?

I sometimes wonder if they just spent the last 30 years just refining Windows 95 would things be better? I suppose people would argue that is exactly what Windows 10 was and 11. Maybe it would have been worse, but I suspect that there's loads of data mining services taking up resources and silly...

Do we have way more computer power than we need?

Having been messing around with some quite old iMacs (actually probably considered ancient at 12-14 years old), I've noticed that they just don't feel old or cumbersome to use. I upgraded the i3 CPU in my 27" iMac to an i5 and it's definitely a bit quicker, enough that you notice. I was happy...

That looks like a good solution, I would have much rather Apple had done that rather than a latch. Mines an LGA 1156 so I don't know if there's anything similar available. On the other hand, I doubt I will ever change the CPU again on this iMac, so I will leave it well alone :-)

I felt very silly after doing it. I had turned an already fiddly process into a bit of a nightmare. I had expected it to take half an hour but bending those pins drew it out by a good extra hour! I will certainly never make that mistake again lol! 😸
