Doctor says I need 'exposure therapy'

Exposure therapy (which, you're right, this is quite arguably a form of exposure) is the quintessential example of a therapy that is effective, but unpopular among patients, and understandably so. That's probably why your therapist didn't say "Great, we're going to do exposure now!" Even the...

Yes, it's a screenname I've used since I was a teenager, but it's not my real name.

    Not quite sure how to...

Hello typeone, people in this thread have given you some good advice. I'll reiterate the point about taking an online quiz. I recommend the RAADS-R (you can Google that term and find it). While not diagnostic, the RAADS-R is a real screening measure that professionals use (or should use...) as a...

    Hi everyone.

Hi! I'm about the same age as you (I'm 21) and I also love cats. Actually, I'm adopting a cat on Friday. Do you have cats? I have two back living with my parents in New York, though this will be the first cat that I take care of by myself. She's five years old and her name is Tarot.

Haha, thanks. Yeah, I am young, I went straight to graduate school from undergrad. I'm in a small department, but I'm the youngest in it. I would say that diagnosing autism is hard in some ways, but in an ideal world it should not be hard in the sense of different clinicians giving different...

    Aspergers Terminology Rant

I'm with you, I dislike this term. "Special interest" falls in line with terms like "special education" and "special needs". I prefer "perseverative interest", "preferred interest", even "restricted interest" (among professionals), etc... but "special interest" is neither informative nor polite...

I think you're right, the Big 5 inflates its psychometric properties by being as vague as possible. This is intentional in its design. However, so far, nothing that is specific has held up to research. Like, Myers-Briggs simply has not replicated good psychometric properties. Articles of...

It's not my field of expertise, but I think the most prominent model that currently exists is the big 5 personality inventory.

@Ragnahawk I do some research with personality inventories (though not Myers-Briggs, as its scientific properties are not very good -- which isn't to say I dislike it, because I think it's very interesting, but it's widely regarded as not useful for studies).

Right, but Asperger's Syndrome isn't an official diagnostic label anymore for exactly this reason. Scientifically and objectively there is no clear-cut difference between Asperger's and autism. People thought that there were differences, but over time that theory was dismantled and disproven...

Is it possible to "outgrow" autism?

Side note, I am autistic AND bipolar and I take meds, and if you want to chat about the meds you may or may not take, etc -- my inbox is open to you. As for the question, you don't ever become neurotypical, but you can gain adaptive skills that help you "blend" in society. In fact, most adult...

    Autistic and Autism Researcher

Not to evade the question, but it's a bit moot because there is no such thing (objectively) as "high functioning" -- which is to say, some people are "higher functioning" than others but there is no single thing that we can measure that tells us what "functioning level" someone is. So, there is...

I'm studying autism specifically, but I do have some flexibility. TCG stands for Trading Card Game. Feel free to ask me anything! :)

How long do your special interests last?

It really varies for me. Pokemon has been a primary special interest of mine, though there has been some fluctuation in intensity, for well over ten years now. And psychology falls into that category too. But then there are others which have come and gone. I went through a bunch of different...

Turns out people with ASD are better at making decisions than NTs

Thanks for reporting on this study. I'm quite interested in this topic myself, as I'm currently writing a grant for a study that is similar (it's ASD-positive and has to do with the social preferences of autistic people -- can't say much more than that!)
