Connecting

Blog details

I’m just finding out about this blog section of AF. Sometimes a thoughtful topic arises in me, but there’s really no place to put it. Today I am writing about connecting.

The Solstice is feeling more like a new year and rebirth than do the other holidays of this season. I am blessed with a couple of neighbors who are supportive and helpful when the occasion arises, but I have no local friends.

I treasure the distant friends I have. People communicate in so many different ways. My daughter likes texting, as does an old colleague from when I was working and my SIL. Others prefer email of various frequencies from daily to sporadic check-ins. A few people use the DMs. No one I know still uses a telephone for talking.

I didn’t like all these new ways of communicating. They felt superficial to me. My daughter has really opened my eyes to communication in the modern age and now I am comfortable with all these electronic ways. I don’t miss telephone talking at all. In fact, I am relieved not to have to do it.

Today, I am making a conscience effort to connect with the various people in my life.
