I got to see a lot of magnificent storms in the tropics but seeing trees explode made me think that being outside during a storm is not necessarily a good idea. That shrapnel would be pretty nasty if it hit you.

That is terrifying. Omg. I'm pretty sure my old house got hit by lightning once but we had a lightning rod. It was one of the loudest, scariest sounds I've ever heard in my life, though, and all the electronics in the house were fried.
