My first thought being paranormal in nature. But then alas, I see dead people. My bad.

My cousin used to constantly hear footsteps above her living room. In a single-floor dwelling.

Thankfully our house doesn't seem to be haunted, but our minds do run away with us in the middle of the night sometimes.
The footsteps story is crazy. That would be most unsettling in a one-floor house.

We do have a fair amount of woods on our property and often hear coywolves and foxes at night, and that's unsettling too.
