I never got over hitting the wing of an owl in my car. Still feel terrible about it.

I wouldn't know what I'd feel. Naturally, humans killing anything is fine. I'd be upset if I killed a pet that provided something practical, like a guard dog or something. I'd feel extremely guilty. Most people nowadays get pets because they're bored and too lazy to have children. A guard dog and its owner I'm sure has a particular bond. Same with a hunting dog and its owner.

Yes cats are fairly useless and bad for the ecosystem but I suppose easing loneliness has some utility. I went hunting and fishing with my grandfather's lab.

It's not laziness that drives someone to get a pet. Most pets require a LOT of time and effort, constantly. I have 2 dogs myself. And I would take a freaking bullet for them, if need be. It was the same when I had cats.

Of course they are sad, a living creature that they care about died.

@Zain
Even if you didn’t feel a bond with your cat and feel no sadness now, can you use your intellect to imagine the sadness that someone else is feeling and try to surmise why?

Loss and grief are common human emotions and they can be studied and understood from a rational perspective even when you do not share them.

I think if you try hard, you could understand why they are sad.

@FayetheAspie It's a cat. Doesn't matter if it was a living creature. Humans are not meant to have pet cats.
@Misery If you're spending so long on a pet, you are probably lacking in real-life relationships and are bored.

@Rodafina I only understand why someone would feel grief and loss with human relationships. Especially in a historical/historical-fictional context where relations are much more important and meaningful to life.
