Yeah IKEA has that effect on people, suddenly you get a strange urge to buy a Volvo. And listen to ABBA lol. Volvo 240 is great. A classic. Swedish steel.

If you're going for a 240 get the estate, 2.3l red block engine with Bosch K-jettronic fuel injection. If you really want to splash out there were turbo versions... I miss our 1983 240 DL estate in light blue.

The most Swedish thing you can do, is to drive a Volvo to IKEA while listening to ABBA. :D I think you automatically get a Swedish citizenship if you do that.

@Forest Cat I like good engineering, and simple, efficient, old-school machines. Seeing an original 240 this weekend in someone's yard made me think. My Corolla has started backfiring, it leaks, it's going to need a timing belt -- I could fix it, with several months' time and a lot of money, but I would almost prefer buying a classic instead.
(Or I fix the Corolla and get a 240 to go with?)

Get a 240. Major faults to watch out for are rust and head gasket issues so go over it with a fine tooth comb should you look at one. Dead fuel gauges are common though.

Also, speedometers not working (usually cracked PCB) and odometers not recording (broken gear) are other things that you can almost fix yourself.
