The reason I don't get my nails done professionally anymore is because when I did, it was like $50, and obviously gel polish or acrylics only last a couple of weeks.
And it's not like I'm trying to impress anyone lol, I'm already in a relationship, I just want to look presentable. Imagine what you would have to spend if you were actually trying to impress a potential partner, or if you had to go to a fancy event.

When my cousin was doing a beauty course at college, she used to do nails etc to get practice with friends and family her college would invite people to give students some experience. If you look online maybe some local colleges want volunteers so you can get nails and eye lashes done for cheap. You could also build up a relationship with the students and they might give you a discount when they graduate :-)
