I personally don't think there's anything shameful about not having a college degree. College isn't for everyone and is especially difficult socially. It's just a narrative I'm sick of hearing from a lot of people in my personal life.

Just like there's nothing wrong with being unemployed because of a disability and being on benefits. Not everyone has the ability or the resources to live a life that's "satisfactory" for our incredibly judgmental and self-serving society.

I just realized that might have sounded sarcastic, it is absolutely not sarcastic. I have a lot of opinions about how unfairly society treats disabled people and people who are otherwise marginalized, and how people are systemically taught to view them.

I have always delighted in smashing stereotypes. Especially with PhDs that like to think they're better than everyone else. It's especially effective when I tell everyone I'm a drug addicted high school drop out with severe mental problems. :)

Those are daring fields for an autistic.

I'm highly extroverted and I find people very fascinating. I have also gotten A's across the board in all of the classes within my major, including abnormal psych and social psychology. For someone who is more of a "people person," I don't think it's as daring as it might be for people who really struggle socially.

The reason I'm getting my BSW in the first place is because I want to train psychiatric service dogs and therapy dogs for people with mental health issues and autism, especially children. I don't want to be a therapist or a counselor. Although being an art therapist in a school or a children's hospital is something I've considered.

That explains a lot. You are extremely intelligent and emotionally intelligent. You have a lot of great things going for you. Just believing in yourself is your biggest obstacle.

I would say that social work is a great profession for some people who are autistic. It is a course in how to interact with people. There’s a lot of options for working one on one with people, and the depth of understanding you bring from any suffering you have survived is a great asset to the clients.

… When I was in social work school, there was a huge array of people with social challenges, although I didn’t know much about autism at the time. Besides, it seems quite common for autistic women to adopt psychology and human behavior as a special interest.
