Yeah birch is known for getting infections. Have you tried birch juice? In the spring you cut off the tip of a small branch and tie a bottle to it to collect the water that comes out. Healthy and delicious.

lol maybe it is, I do it every spring. It was more common before but many people still do it. On wikipedia it says "drill a hole in the tree trunk" but that's just stupid. Better to snip the end off a thin branch.

When I was a child we had a silver birch tree in the front garden. I think it was cut down in the late eighties. Some wood lingered in the shed for over twenty years before it eventually found its way into the wood basket.

I actually have my very own birch tree that grows with me. 
When my dad was born, his parents planted a small birch tree. And when I was born, my dad planted a small birch tree. And they are still standing. My dads tree is 83 years old now so it's pretty big.
