That's harsh, they don't fail that often. Is is possible to recover the data or is the drive a total loss?

That's a good idea @tree . External enclosures do sometimes fail. If you are lucky the drive will be unharmed.

What kind of drive and brand was it? There are quite a few links out there regarding data recovery depending on the drive and circumstances of its failure.
