@maycontainthunder 18C is about 64F. How is it that warm if the heat doesn't work? Or did you mean the heat doesn't work consistently?

The radiators have been turned off due to leaks for years. 18C is what it was on the windowsill. It has been colder than the original 18C this afternoon. The wind has picked up so another evening where the fire can't be lit.

Fire? A woodstove? Or what?

Logburner. Too risky to light because it has been known to roar up the chimney (yes, it is swept a couple of times a year).

logburner is a new word to me. I have a woodstove as my sole source of heat.

The original heating system in this house was reliant on the fireplace behind the logburner heating a boiler. The windows are hopefully getting replaced so this room can actually retain heat. Maybe we'll try and fix the radiators at some point.

Make sure you get windows you can open easily like not having to climb a ladder or onto a window ledge, the plastic frame in my house has partly aged out of use ,screws are very rusted, there aren't many people who will help me repair them,2 miles from the coast of n.e.England isn't kind to metal
