I had a psychologist tell me to my face that I'm not autistic. He had no explanation for everything else or the fact that I was diagnosed prior to that by a doctor who worked with me for several months.

Sometimes people still associate the spectrum with severely impacted functioning--and that's it. Doesn't make them accurate or helpful necessarily.

Thank you all :) I’m hoping I can build my case enough to be believed. @Crossbreed I’ll definitely be looking into that.

And not one has even asked about sensory issues, past relationships, social anxiety, meltdowns (all issues of mine). Just, via televisit, “you don’t seem autistic”

I’m still fighting with my current therapist over whether or not I’m autistic… I’m extroverted, and I lack the intelligence that most ASD people have, but everything else fits. She thinks that’s enough evidence to say that I only have mental health issues :/ I also always get told that I “don’t look autistic,” idk what that means

@crewlucaa_ I have no idea what that means, either. I didn’t know people could see what others were feeling/thinking. I wish I was telepathic :p You’d think the pros would understand that we know ourselves best, and that they’d want to help us get things figured out…
L
Luca
Yes, exactly! I don’t get why they think they know us better than we do, maybe just because they’re “professionals?”

I’m not sure, either… makes it way tougher than it needs to be!

You need a non psychiatric therapist, psychiatrists are hung up on mental illness
L
Luca
Streetwise is right… there are therapists that specialize in ASD. My therapist is a bit too focused on mental illness too. I believe that I’ve been misdiagnosed with certain things, but I definitely have Autism.

I’m not sure what my psychiatrist specializes in, honestly. He did finally give me my ADHD meds and knows that I also have OCD… we’ll see what he says.

Hello again Lindsay -- The "you don't seem autistic" bit often means "I see you can speak English, use the long-distance phone, and drive a car." You could be a trained dancing bear & he'd give the same answer!

*circus music plays during psych session* :p
I just wish they would ask rather than make an assumption off the bat… we’ll see what happens. I’ve been medically (for lack of a better word) gaslit before, so him saying that definitely got me a bit riled up.

I know the feeling :( I hope you can get an answer soon. I’m here if you need to talk about it though.
