What happened?

I went to go write in a coffee house. I carry a portable typewriter or pen & paper because my eyes are all muddled up. Anyway, one place I'd been told was OK with type writing, so I go there & hole up & get a bunch of work done--and the radio & the constant dogs in & out of the shop got on my nerves.

Some fellow comes in, sees the type writer, starts asking forty thousand questions (he is restoring an old 1920s Remington Noiseless 6) and, after talking machinery a bit, I decide to walk down to a different coffee shop where I'd been able to get some writing done last time. Humorously their book store & coffee shop has a typewriter on the sign.

This is humorous because a page & a half into something, an employee comments about the noise from the machine. (This in a store where the radio is also going & the shop is full of dogs, one even on the table, and where I had to hear 4 people carry on very graphically about their surgeries the last week I was there.)

I agree that yes I can try running a backing-sheet to keep the noise down but I will be around for a bit. (It is too cold to work outside.)
The employee is not the problem, typewriters are not intrinsically evil, the management is all right with expressing the legitimate desire not to hear my beat-up Royal Portable-- So I go back to the noisy, doggy one.

A few minutes later after hearing more & more radio racket I decide that I am going to go back so I do and, having promised the employee at the other shop (less noisy, less doggy, unfortunately bereft of type writing) I end up going there & writing long hand for a few hours. Still insanely productive but I now have ink all over me and, as I promised, I am not spending another nickel there.

Come home & the landlady (who is upset that the microwave here smoked up the place, blaming the 1980s microwave she installed when I've reiterated that it's probably just I have no idea how to microwave things) has come through & done "a swoop." I found my fabric scissors in the kitchenette with the spoons.

So I am cutting out patterns to make more trousers today, and planning to type up my manuscript tonight--it's getting long-- I swear one of these days I fantasize about going out in public & not hearing a damn radio.
If they want loud, we can do loud. Give me 15 minutes with the portable phonograph, some Mendelssohn, and a full size desk typewriter and they will wish they had their dogs and Soundcloud rappers back.

On the positive side, I got tons done & decided I love Miniature American Shepherds (they are tiny Australian Shepherds and they are adorable.)

I love Miniature American Shepherds too :) (I know what all breeds of dogs are lol) Sounds like a really aggravating day though :/ I hope you’re able to find a quiet place to get more work done. It’s really cool that you use a typewriter.
The only one near me (coffee shop, in air quotes) is a Dunkin Donuts, and as you can probably imagine it’s impossible to get any work done in there.

There is one nice little coffee shop around here but it’s in the main town which is too long of a walk for me in my condition :/
What kind of manuscript are you writing? :)

I'm writing another novel. It's nothing spectacular, just a continuation of one that I published awhile ago. I don't care if it's popular or not; I have to write.
The typewriter (and the fountain pen) are the only ways I can write this long. Eyestrain and lacking attention span makes staying on the computer a bit tricky. I was using a 1942 Royal Quiet De Luxe today, small manual machine, very easy to write with.

Used to write with Pilot rollerball pens but then found out that I angle my hand a lot--when the tip wore out, lost the ball, and then leaked everywhere. Fountain pens I can use. Ballpoints, no.
My tool kit then looks very outdated but it all seems to work ok in the long run.

Awesome! :) It doesn’t matter how “popular” your novel is, as long as you’re proud of it :) And I find your posts really cool and interesting so I’m sure you would write an intelligent and intriguing novel.
I’m similar when it comes to art. I feel like I have to do it… for myself. I have a short attention span. But I can work on a piece for several hours. That’s the magic of creative arts!

I actually have a lot of trouble handwriting! Pens are easier than pencils. Drawing and painting are easier than writing. But my handwriting is pretty illegible and I have a much easier time typing or using a tablet. Probably has to do with my physical limitations but it’s always a pain in school.
