NZ Greater Short-tailed Bat

This Bat was mostly a ground dweller and had dark blue fur. Sadly it is now extinct as some fool let rats loose in the only island the last of their kind were living on
Oh Wow I LOVE This!!!!
That is one of the very few species which makes me want to go to New Zealand.

Glad you liked the bat, there are some people monitoring the islands where it was last seen in the 1960's and they have picked up bat echolocation sounds but they can't tell if it is made by this species or the common Long-tailed Bat, oddly the IUCN class it as critically endangered not extinct so may be they find the evidence convincing. A single colour photo exists of it (its on the net) and the blue tint of the wings is quite striking.
