i use gouache, it's more vivid than just watercolour not so transparent, and dries quicker than oils, you can also speed up the drying process by going over it with a hairdrier.
 
Of course! It's been so many years since I painted regularly I almost forgot about gouache. :) I love gouache, too. Such depth of colour. I like tempera for the same reason but haven't done that since I was a kid.
 
You need to use it fairly quickly, from memory, because of the egg. But the tempera powder paint itself lasts a lifetime if kept sealed, away from light, I think.
