Why are all the "new threads" in Chinese?

Above.

Just wondered, is it a bug in the software? Oh hang on, the OP of the Chinese threads is the same one for all of them, methinks you have a spammer.

The site's been spammed by bots, devs need to sort it ASAP. I could sort it if I had full server permissions. If I was them I'd ensure there's a decent captcha on sign ups, I can't remember if there is one at all, but if there is it needs to be better. @tree please read this.

Would be better for @Nitro or @Brent to read it, they're the admins,@tree is just a Mod.

For now they can ban the new sign up and the IP (if it's not ever changing, some use a botnet of IPs), but since a bot has obviously managed to sign up it's unlikely to resolve the problem on it's own because there will likely be more auto sign ups in future by others using the same bot. There's thousands of spam bots online constantly going through blogs and forums trying to sign up, many forums and blogs use the same backend system which makes it easier for them, some can even overcome some captcha systems, hence why we see complex ones on many sites these days, they can be annoying, but unfortunately they're necessary to prevent this crap. If it's not resolved properly, before long there will be hundreds of spam bots signing up quicker than the staff can ban them and you won't be-able to see much else.

Why do they do it? What is the point of it?
Spam bots are used to advertise something, often something dodgy like a scam (E.g. a get rich quick scam) and clicking the link alone might make them a tiny amount of money from advertising each time which also adds up, this happens to be linking to something foreign that no-one here is likely to be interested in, but most bots will just spam whatever they can relentlessly no matter what language the site is. This one appears to be advertising an online casino.

Update: It may not even be the casino owner behind it, sometimes it can use it custom URL that earns the person commission when anyone signs up under them.

If this site was hosted in the UK, this sort of thing would be outlawed by now, especially with the new data protection laws that came in last Friday (see my topic in the computer and technology section).

I don't think these kinds of people care about the law...

I see, thank you pjcnet :)

They're gone for now, well done staff, if more appear however the captcha will definitely need upgrading (or added if there isn't one) because it will almost certainly get worse otherwise.

As has been pointed out, people who do this kind of thing ain't concerned with what is and is not legal.

You miss the point. Read the link I provided.

Philippine law enforcement is going after these people as organized criminal perpetrators. Not from just a perspective of prosecuting their online operations, but rather applying direct physical intervention inside the Philippines from where South Koreans are apparently operating from.

These days you don't want to be a serious target of law enforcement in Mr. Duterte's Philippines. Their president seems to care little for due process. Something both their law enforcement and military are acutely aware of.

Clearly anyone with such criminal intent has little or no regard for laws anywhere. Nothing new about that. However not all legal jurisdictions handle such things in accordance with the law itself. This is a place where summary executions may now happen without due process altogether.

It might be amusing if such an enterprise could operate online completely unscathed in the Cayman Islands, legally or not. But in the Philippines they may well be gambling with their lives, depending on what mood their president might be in at the time.

I've seen this happen a lot on Wrong Planet. I've also seen a lot of spam for black magic love potions or whatever, which normally pop up in GAD. Guess they think autistic people are really that desperate to find love, whoever "they" are.

Bots can be programmed to focus on any domain with forums dealing with specific subjects like romance and dating and execute spamming accordingly. Then reprogram the same bot for other subjects...and effectively spam the planet. Pervasive advertising at minimal effort and cost. No "thinking" required.
